I would like to import about 100 addresses into Microsoft Streets and Trips. Instead of pushpins, I would like these to show only as numbers 1-100, and would like to be able to match these numbers back to the Excel file. Is this possible?

If I understand your question correctly, the ability to set up a point with a custom icon of a number is certainly possible. Not sure what you mean by "match these numbers back to the Excel file. The ability to export from Street and Trips is not possible. That function would require MapPoint. If you mean that you have certain information on the spreadsheet that you want to be able to manually cross reference, then that would not be a problem either.

If I could manually cross reference the pushpin to the printed out excel file, that would be great. When I import the Excel file to Streets & Trips, it shows on the map as the red pushpins. I'd like the imported addresses to show as numbers(1-100), then be able to reference those numbers back to my Excel print out. Hope I'm explaining clearly...

Ok, here is how I would do that, there may be other ways. You could start by creating your custom icons "numbers" or use the 50 numbers supplied by Streets & Trips so that you will only need to create an additional 50. Import the data, then pick a pushpin and right click on it. That will open a menu. Go to the bottom of the list to "Properties". Click on that and you will then open up the pushpin properties box. Change your red pushpin to the number you desire. When you get finished numbering your locations, save your work as a map or if you prefer, save it as a template.

Depending on the information, beyond the address, I would think that you could configure your spreadsheet to import it and then have that information display in the balloon for that particular number or pushpin.

ktrack's suggestion will work. But it's a lot of work.

Here's what I did:

1. Create a spreadsheet with the following in the first four columns of the first row:
Name Street City Province

2. I put sequential numbers in the Name column and corresponding addresses in the Street, City, Province columns.

3. Saved the spreadsheet.

4. Used the Data > Import Data Wizard in Streets&Trips to import the data.

5. The pushpins were automatically created.

6. Click to turn on the Legend and Overview pane.

7. Right-click on the pushpin set that was created (it will have the same name as the spreadsheet you imported from), select Show All Pushpin Information from the right-click menu.

All of the pushpins will have flags beside them with the name and address information. Since the Name is just the number from the first column of the spreadsheet, you can compare it exactly to the spreadsheet.

All attempt at humor aside, depending on the information that needs to be compared, they may be able to import all of the information and have it display in the balloon That might clutter the map but it also might save alot of back and forth between the screen and the spreadsheet.

Great thinking. This wasn't possible in versions of the product prior to Streets and Trips 2010.

Use ktrack's suggestion above.

That means you will need a seperate pushpin icon for each number from 1-100. As ktrack said, there are already icons for 1-50 included and you'll have to create 50 more custom icons.

Then, after you've imported the addresses and the pushpin set is created, you'll have to go into the pushpin properties for each pushpin and change the pushpin icon for that pushpin to the icon with the number in the spreadsheet.

It will do exactly what you want.

Lennitard, you may not want to get into creating custom pushpins; it is potentially a lot of work.

The closest I can get to your objective is to have a set of pushpins that show only the number in a pushpin flag, or "balloon." Those balloons come as a default size and the minimum size is two lines, one for the name and one for the address. However, you can get your item (or location) number on to the top line and leave the second line blank which is about as clean as I can make it.

To do that, I create a spreadsheet with the first column containing the number sequence. Like Ken's spreadsheet, the other columns contain address data or whatever you like. When I get into the Data Import Wizard, I make sure the first column, the number sequence column, has "Name" as the data type. Then, when I have finished the Data Import Wizard, I select the new pushpin set and go to Properties. There, I select the fourth tab "Balloon" and make sure all boxes are UNCHECKED. Then, select "Show all pushpin information" from the right-click drop-down menu for that new set; that will give you the result I describe above.

P. S.

You CAN reduce the balloon to a small box with just the number by selecting the pushpin and then selecting "Show name" from the right-click drop-down menu for that pushpin. I think this has to be done one at a time; I cannot see a way of doing it for multiple pushpins.

Utilizing the excellent suggestions from Ken and Spadesflush to modify the import display balloon, then simply change the display pushpin to one of the small round dots from the icons available. This may not be 100% of what you were looking for but it would get the job done and save a lot of time.

One further suggestion: if you show only the name of the pushpin as I suggest above in my P. S., you do not have to bother to uncheck the column details in the balloon properties as I initially suggested. Those details will automatically be hidden. You might even want those column details available which will be accessible by toggling Show Name for a selected pushpin.
