Garmin Mobile PC 5.00.70 allows North America & European maps
Retired Guy
Garmin has just released an updated version of Mobile PC (version 5.00.70) that allows multiple map sets. I am now running both City Navigator North America NT and City Navigator Europe NT. Here is what worked for me (after several calls to Garmin technical support for help).
  • Go to garmin.com and install Garmin MapSource if you have not done so already.
  • Install Garmin Mobile PC with 20x or 10x GPS receiver from DVD (it comes with City Navigator North America NT if purchased in the USA).
  • Follow instructions to register & unlock Mobile PC (the GPS receiver must be attached and you will input its serial #).
  • Close Garmin Mobile PC.
  • Go to garmin.com and log on to your “MyGarmin” account.
  • Download and install the new Garmin Mobile PC update.
  • Close Garmin Mobile PC, if open.
  • Install Garmin City Navigator Europe NT from DVD. DO NOT COMPLETE REGISTRATION & UNLOCK.
  • Go to garmin.com and log on to your “MyGarmin” account. NOW complete registration & unlock (you will input your GPS receiver serial #).
  • Close Garmin Mobile PC, if open. Open MapSource and select City Navigator Europe NT from dropdown list.
  • Change the map scale to see complete map of Europe, use select tool to draw square around whole map and select. This places all maps in the left window.
  • Transfer maps to Garmin Mobile PC. THIS PROCESS MAY TAKE TWO HOURS OR MORE. The time will depend on your CPU, memory and hard drive. (The first time I did this I got an error message after two hours and had to start over, the second time worked perfectly.)
  • When transfer is complete, close MapSource and open Garmin Mobile PC (your GPS receiver must be connected).

You should now be able to see maps and route information in North America and Europe. I tried to get driving instructions from Virginia to France and got a timeout error message. I was able to view the European map and city data.

You can check to see if Garmin Mobile PC is “seeing” the Europe maps as follows:

  1. Select “Tools”, then “Manage My Data”, then “Map Sets”.
  2. You should see, three files: WW Autoroute DEM Basemap NR, Detailed maps, and Built-in maps.
  3. Select Detailed maps and you should see “CN Europe NT 2010.xx”. DO NOT DELETE!
  4. Select Built-in maps and you should see “CN North America NT 2010.xx”. DO NOT DELETE!

Special Note: my OS is Windows 7, I must open Garmin Mobile PC in “Administrator mode” or it will not find any maps. Perhaps someone can find a way around this.

Thanks for the explanation, Retired Guy.

Mobile PC has had this capability since the original version. It simply requires that you have either the GPS20x or GPS10x version.

It will not work on the Software-Only version, even with 5.00.70.

You should be aware that 5.00.70 appears to be broken. A number of users who have upgraded to it have reported that it quits working randomly while navigating with it. If you experience this, you will need to run the Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and end the Mobile PC task before you can run it again.
