GPS Locator not working in my new Streets and Trips
rvtraveler
After reading posts on this forum for several days, I went out and purchased MS Streets & Trips with GPS Locator 2010 today. I installed the software but cannot get the GPS locator to work.

When I put the GPS receiver in the USB port, it does light up

When I "Configure the GPS Receiver" it shows the GPS device is found

The Device Manager does show the GPS receiver (u-blox 5 GPS and GALILEO Receiver)

But GPS locator will not pick up any satellites. Even when computer is outside and skies are clear.

I just keep getting the same error message ...

The application has been searching for satellites and is unable to get enough data to determine your position. Make sure that your GPS receiver has clear access to the sky.
Have gone to the MS support site which has been useless . Anyone have any suggestions/ideas?

TIA, Lori

Editing to add: I am running Windows XP

Hi Lori,

Welcome to Laptop GPS World.

Relax, everything is just fine. Just use the short USB extension cable that was included in the box with your Streets and Trips 2010 w/GPS Locator. Many users have reported that these types of GPS receivers (USB GPS dongles) are unable to work when plugged directly to a laptop. Using an extension cable will let the GPS receiver be a bit further away from the RF interference generated by the laptop computer. It should work then.

Make sure you are using the extension cable and placing the GPS away from the laptop. Some laptops put out enough electical interference to interfere with the GPS. Make sure you have a clear line of sight to the sky. Test outside the first time. Expect it to take a few minutes to find the satellites the first time. Go to the GPS Configuration page and look to see what COM port is showing. Let us know how that works out and we will see if more needs to be done... Do well!

Thanks everyone. Just to let you know, I had tried the extention before posting my help request. Guess I should have mentioned that. Still got the same error message.

However, I put the CD back in and selected "Reinstall" (This option fixes missing or corrupt files...) and then reinstalled the software and somehow, it is now working .

Must be a very weak GPS receiver though, because it does not work in the house (my Magellan has no problem). Haven't had a chance to try it in the motorhome yet.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to use ... lousy documentation.

Thanks again, Lori

Thanks for letting us know, Lori. I'm glad you've corrected the issue.

The following is an interesting solution for an external USB GPS mounted on a motor home: http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/2388-rv-mounting-mr-350-usb-gps-antenna-receiver

I have done all of the above, re-installed 2009 bought 2013 I use the cord that came with the 2009, Since I moved from Texas to Kansas that is when it stopped working, It says that it is searching for sat. For a month its searching for sat. Even Microsoft Street and Trips experts don't know why its not working. Any Ideas?

Searching for satellites indicates S&T has a valid connection with a GPS but the GPS is not locking into any satellites. If you are truly using the extension as mentioned above and have provided a clear view of the sky for the GPS for a period of time, I would suspect the GPS is faulty.

One other thing I can think of; make sure the GPS is right side up - that is the side with 'Microsoft' printed on it is facing up.

You shouldn't have any problems with canyons blocking your satellite view in Kansas!

Maybe you could download GPS Gate and let it find your GPS (make sure S&T isn't running). If the notification bar icon shows green, you are receiving a valid locked signal. http://gpsgate.com/products/gpsgate_client

Thank you, FYI I have tried this GPS unit with 3 other computers I even went and bought 2013 again with another of the same GPS unit and it had the same issue

I can't see how that type of problem is associated with the software. However it sounds like you have thoroughly tested it. Have you tried any other brand of GPS dongle such as the GlobalSat BU-353 S3 or S4 with that computer? It does use a different driver but will work fine with S&T.
