How to include a phone number to the data imported to Streets & Trips?
Craftco888
I'm importing data from Excel or a txt document, and one of the field is a phone number field. When I go to import, Streets & Trips asks for a format choice. There is no option for a phone number, only a general. When I choose this, it adds commas to the number example: (215) 686-1123 gets imported as 2,156,861,123

Can anyone help!
Larry
Hi Craftco888,

Welcome to LaptopGPSWorld!

When you are matching columns during the import wizard just call the phone number <Other data>. Then when the pushpin data set is loaded right-click and choose properties then go to the balloon tab and check the phone number box.

Anything loaded in as <other data> is turned off/unchecked by default in S&T but it can be checked so that it shows up in the balloons.

Hi Larry;
I'm good with the process you outlined above, problem is that when you display the pushpin data, the field with the data in it that I mapped for a phone number gets converted to a numeric format. See Below:

The Roofing Outlet Inc
1414 Chestnut Ave
Hillside, NJ 7205

Facts ID: 2572
Contact: Greg
Phone #: 9,089,640,200
Outside Sales: Joe Doran
ID/Status: Customer
Industry Type: Roofing

Any suggestions????
Chris

Hi Chris,

OK, I think I understand your question now. However, when I made a test spreadsheet with similar data I did not see the issue you are seeing.

The phone numbers showed up looking like phone numbers.

Try making a test csv or xls file with just a couple of entries and try it again. I'd be willing to look at your source file if you want to send it to me.

I can send you my spread sheet, where can I e-mail it to or however you wish me to get it over to you.
Thanks
Chris

I wonder if the phone number column in the original spreadsheet is formated for the cells to display as a general number. Can the column cells be formatted for a phone number?

Or just general text would likely be better.

I wanted to learn about importing, as I had never tried it before. I followed the directions listed in this form, particularly to format the phone number column as "General Text" and to turn on "Other Data" in the Pushpin Data Set Properties. This worked just fine for a xls. file. Thanks for the question, Chris, and the answers, Larry and Ken.

Below is a workaround from Larry who was a great help in solving this problem for me:

Hi Chris,

I've got a 3 step workaround for you :-)

>From what I can tell the original data for the phone number was entered as NNNNNNNNNN and then they used Excel to format it "special" as a phone number which turns the data into (NNN)NNN-NNNN.

Step 1: save the spreadsheet as a CSV file.
Step 2: re-opened the CSV file in Excel. This whiped out the special formating and now is shows up as "general" formating in the desired format: (NNN)NNN-NNNN.
Step 3: re-save as xls

I've attached the data you sent me after going through these steps and it looks great.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
