Where is the POI folder in Garmin Mobile PC?
thor_hedderich
Hi to all, I have installed and reinstalled twice Garmin Mobile PC, and has not been able to find the POI folder. A friend of mine told me it was a system folder, but if so where can I find it so I can add some POIs.

Best regards,

Thor Hedderich

* I have tried the Garmin Mobile PC in Windows XP and Windows 7, but in the c:\Garmin Mobile I can not find such a folder

C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\GarminMobilePC\poi is where mine is located on my 64bit Vista machine.

The quickest way to find your GarminMobilePC folder is right click on the icon and choose Properties. Then click Find target. That will take you to the folder where Que.exe is located. If you don't have a poi folder at that location (I don't on most of my computers), just create one.

What I do not understand is why the folder is not automatically created if the folder is as important as it looks it should be created in the setup process, perhaps a bug, I downloaded the last version update and installed in a XP system and also in a Windows 7, I was not able to find the folder in neither one of them.

I suspect the folder is created if you do something that requires it. This could involve using the poi loader or other related activities. If you don't have any extras, the folder is not required.

Thor, I think you are misunderstanding the purpose of the POI folder.

The City Navigator maps that come with Mobile PC have their millions of POIs in the map database (GMAPPROM.IMG). You cannot do anything with them except search for them in Mobile PC. They are not available to users outside of Mobile PC. You cannot edit or add to them.

So for normal use of Mobile PC the ..\POI folder is not necessary.

The only thing the POI folder is used for is custom POIs. You normally create those by running a CSV or GPX file containing the necessary information through Garmin's POILoader program (a free download from Garmin's web site). POILoader will automatically create the POI folder if it does not already exist.

Unless someone has given you GPI files (custom POI files created by POILoader) to use, the POI folder is never necessary to exist. If you have GPI folders already created for you, you can just make the \POI folder in the ..\GarminMobilePC folder and copy the GPI files into it.

Thanks to all specially to Ken, really a very good explanation on POI folder. I will have to learn how to create or understand the POI thing, is there some tutorial on this matter I could find? I am new an all this, and still do not understand some terms as GPI, GPX and so.
