Loading two Garmin DVD maps on same PC
Maxicard
Just bought the Garmin 60CSx and two 24k DVD’s (West & N. central) I installed the N. Central Garmin DVD and all went well. Though now I want to install the 2nd DVD (west) to the same PC, though the PC will not run setup, nor can I even view anything on the DVD with Explorer (acts like the DVD is blank).

Though if I put the DVD into another PC it then starts up Setup like it’s suppose too. But I want to install both DVD on the same PC. What must I do? I've read the info regarding unlock coupons, unlock codes, etc, but I don't think this is my problem at least until I get the 2nd West region DVD loaded.

I have SS# for both "legal" copies of the Garmin maps. Note: wasn't even prompted for the SS when I loaded the N. Central region.

Can you help??

Are you able to view other DVDs in explorer? Whether it would install or not, it still should show in explorer. I would check your DVD reader more closely.

It sounds like the second DVD is marginal and the DVD drive in the first computer is also marginal (will only read really good DVDs).

One solution is to place it in the computer that lets you read it and copy the entire DVD to a USB drive, then use the USB drive to install it on the first computer.

Or if the two computers are networked together you could set the DVD drive on the second computer to share and then install the maps on the first computer from the DVD drive in the second one.

As I hate keeping track of all those installation CD's & DVD's, the first thing I do is copy the disks on to a 500GB USB hard drive and also to a 1TB USB hard drive. I am always having problems with disks not working on this or that DVD player! That way I can also include text notes about installations, license numbers, unlock codes, etc. One (or two) small HDs are so much better than notebooks or stacks of CD's.
(I'm a photographer and I am fanatical about backup copies of backup copies!)
Let us know how you like your GPS60CSx!

Thank you all for replying.

But NO I cannot copy the new "Western US" disk, Explorer can't even see anything on the disk. It’s as if once I've loaded my first disk "N. Central US" there is a protective code that does not allow any other Garmin disks to be loaded.

As said I can place the DVD into my laptop and it immediately is recognized and starts the setup program. And I will do this later so I can retrieve that topo's I need, but what a pain, I want everything on one PC.

And Yes, I will make a copy of the original disk, but it still would not allow me to load it on the original PC I loaded the first DVD.
Still need help. I will try calling Garmin. I'm sure that won't be fun.

And Yes, The Garmin 60CSx is everything I hoped it would be. I have used many Garmin's and Topcon (survey Grade) GPS units in the past. I read many reviews from around the US before purchasing this particular unit..

Thanks

You are talking about Topo US, right? I was led to believe Topo USA maps were not locked and others have loaded more than one section. Gadget Girl would probably know more about that though.

We were suggesting you open the DVD on the computer you can open it on and copy it to a USB key. Then try the installation from there. It is possible the copy of the disk you have and your DVD reader are not compatible. It is a copy, not the original, right?

Thanks tcassidy
That is what I'm doing as we speak. I think one of the other comments were that my DVD reader may be a bit "marginal". I'm going with that and the email replies I've received directly from Garmin. They state.. there is not security Block that would not allow someone to install two Garmin DVD regions on the same PC.

I'm also taking another readers comments and making a back-up onto my large external HD on both DVD regions.

One last question... I got confused that it may be related to the 25-digit code to "unlock" the maps. What exactly is that referencing again?
Thanks for your help!!! and all other readers!

If a Garmin product is not locked in the first place, there will be no '25 digit code' required to unlock it. If it is a locked product, it ships with one code that will unlock the product to one GPS device (e.g. your 60Csx). When you install the map and open it in MapSource, MapSource will let you know the map is locked and request the unlock code.

All is good. Had to network my Desktop & laptop. The laptop was the only PC that would read it. All installed as it should be and transfered all the maps I needed to my new 60CSx. Made backups also. So thank you and the others for everything. Was just a "marginal" DVD reader issue.

Glad to hear that. Isn't it great the problem DVD reader is in the desktop. They are way cheaper to replace than one in a laptop.
