I have no product key for my Canmore GT-730F(L) USB GPS Stick Data Logger
damagicx
I've had a Canmore GT-730F(L) USB GPS Stick Data Logger for a while, but I have no product key.

Can any one help?
GadgetGirl
Do you need a product key for a receiver? Or do you mean drivers? Usually product keys are for software or for unlocking maps.
GadgetGirl
If it's drivers you need, there are some at Canmore GT-730F(L) USB GPS Tracker Stick Data Logger (click on Download & FAQ)

Does Windows recognize the unit? What GPS navigational software are you trying to use?

I need the product Key to lock the Maps so I can read my locations. It may have 28 numbers and letter to it. It was on the back of the CD cover.
GadgetGirl
Are these Garmin maps like City Navigator? If they are, you will probably have to call Garmin.
If you have at some point unlocked your maps online, you should be able to get the unlock code from your online account. (I'm not sure if this is possible though with a non-Garmin unit.)
If the maps are a few years old, you may just want to buy updated maps.

Garmin map unlock codes are specific to Garmin GPS products. If you already have Garmin maps you acquired with a previous Garmin GPS product, the code would only work with that GPS. If you are using the maps with nRoute, GPS Gate may help you resolve this though.

Have you ever used these maps? What application were you using them with? A Garmin handheld, nRoute, Mobile PC??? We need more info in order to help you.

This is the item I'm talking about CANMORE ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.

That's the USB GPS stick, and that should not require any "product key" to function.

Did that USB GPS unit come with a mapping software product, which you require a product key for? If yes, what is the software name?
damagicx
It came with a CD that reads "GPS receiver, Bluetoohth, and USB dongle" on it.
tcassidy
The Bluetooth key would be '0000' but there is not likely to be any mapping software on that CD.

Where is it asking you for a Product Key? Product keys are used for unlocking the mapping software and/or the maps. You basically have hardware and hardware drivers but no maps or mapping application. You need to purchase software such as Microsoft Streets & Trips to get this to work.
This is a line on page 5 from the User Manual on the referenced Web page:

5) Load your GPS mapping or routing software, along with the corresponding maps of the areas that you are occupying or plan to travel. Start the application. Make sure the application is set for the COM port that your Laptop/UMPC device will use for serial communication. Now you should be ready to use your GPS application as directed by the user documentation that came with the software. More configurations may be necessary

He needs the key code that registers the product and unlocks it. Have you checked the website or called the manufacture for the key code? Most of the time you can email their support with your product serial number and they can give you the key code. Sometimes the key code can be found on or in the disc sleeve.

There is no code needed to unlock the GPS or data logger. The only code involved with that product involves some photo tagging software according to the website.

I have just received my Canmore GT-730F(L), and in the instructions they state to get the new photo-tagging software from their website. Having done so, after installing, when you go to "read the device", the tagging software prompts the user for a Product ID code. There is none to be found.

They ship this with an ~2.5" CD with the drivers & the "user manuals" (leave much to be desired in my opinion) on it, but no Product ID on the paper cover - or anywhere in or on the packaging. Since the unit I bought does not have a battery in it (or Bluetooth it seems), I'm guessing this is just the "logging stick" and they send the software pkg for the "Bluetooth GPS" with it to provide the drivers to detect it on the USB. Not what I thought I was buying, but did get it. So, their photo-tagging software may be "a bust" and you'll (like me) have to find something else to get the data log from the stick.

If anyone does have a way for this to work, I also would love to know.

The Canmore GPS you have is not a Bluetooth device. It plugs directly in to a USB port on your computer. The driver supplied on the CD would allow it to provide GPS data to a COM port to be used by a navigation program. Be aware it appears to be at 38,400 bps and would not work directly with Streets & Trips.

As for the photo tagging software I don't know about that but it appears from the manual to need a product ID. If you can't find one, why not email Canmore.

For those (like me) who want to use the device as a Data-Logger, and not real-time, you need to be able to download the stored data (compressed) and get it in a usable format. The documentation supplied does not give any hints as to how to do that.

I have found what works for me. Using the supplied GPS USB Dongle (English version)\GPS Viewer, assuming you have to com port & baud correct;
connect to the device
"log read" and save it to a file
dis-connect from device
log decompress to a file
it generates:
.logg
.klm (suitable for Google Earth)
rmc.nmea

click on the .klm, and Google Earth should do the rest to shoe your previously recorded track

Can someone explain why my GT-730F/L keeps looking for a serial port, and I can't find any way to tell it to look for USB port. I also don't understand the product key thing, I have the number that came with mine, but don't know where to put it... HELP
tcassidy
Most USB GPS come with a driver which converts the USB signal to a COM (serial) port. That is because most navigation software packages look for GPS data on a COM port.

When you installed the driver, it would have told you the COM port number. Otherwise, you can look in Device Manager under Ports (COM and LPT) for an appropriate entry.

I know the com port number, but the device wants a USB. I can find no way to tell it to use serial port, or how to tell it to emulate a usb port. Anyone familiar with this problem?

Buster,

I plug my GT-730F/l into the USB port and tell it the COM# & Speed and the software uses that to go out to the USB port and "find" my GPS. I'm using the Skytraq prog they sent with it on disk v 0.4.223

Hope this helps
