Hi, I have a Windows 7 Laptop and a Desktop with a paid for Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010 installed on both. The first was the laptop which was automatic, and then I had to call MS to authorized my desktop. They installed the key, and except for this one item, all works fine.
When I hit Route/Update construction info, I get a popup which says:
Initially, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Streets & Trips\17.0\Data did not have a Construction .dat file in it. I went to MS and downloaded the 2010 Construction Update file (ConstructionA9021000.dat), and put it in the above folder. It's Size on disk is: 140 KB (143,360 bytes). When I do this, and hit Route/Update again, I now get the box, with the zigzag green lines which constantly go from flag to flag, but no movement on the progress bar. After a few seconds, I get the above popup box.
I also have Streets & Trips 2007 installed, and it get the Construction update OK with it.
This desktop is the ICS computer, so all my other networked computers, including the Windows 7 laptop go thru this computer to the Internet. The Windows 7 laptop get it's construction update info just fine.
What can I do to fix this?

I also have Streets & Trips 2007 installed, and it get the Construction update OK with it.

So construction updates work on the laptop and it is running S&T 2010 on Win7. What OS is the desktop is running?
Did it EVER work on the desktop or did it just recently stop working?

Hi Larry, and thanks for the reply. The desktop is running XP SP3. I can't be sure the desktop ever got construction updates with Streets & Trips 2010, but it gets them just fine with Streets & Trips 2007. Also, with the up to date .dat in the 17/Data folder, when I request an update, it tells me I have the most up to date file and it asks if I "want to download the most recent info anyway".
Could there be something the MS guy on the phone did or did not do when he authorized S&T 2010 on the desktop? How did he get the Product ID installed? Perhaps there is a registry key missing or?
It is interesting that with no .dat file I just get the warning popup--no green zigzags, but with the up to date file, I get the popup with green zigzag lines connecting the "flags", and then the warning popup.The green lines keep going forever, but no bars advance on the progress bar.
If I didn't have to sit on hold for 30 minutes to get reauthorized, I'd try a remove 2010, and redownload and reinstall, but I'm on a cell phone line and it's not the fastest connection to download that huge file and the wait on hold is pretty long!

I won't think it has anything to do with being "authorized" or "reauthorized". The construction updates are available freely for even those running the 60-day trail.

Check to see that your registry key is pointing to the correct download location:

Larry, the loc in the above key is: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=140978&clcid=0x409. Your post has an abbreviated link, but it is the same. And for what it's worth, there is also a 14.0 "folder" with 17.0. the 14.0 is for Streets & Trips 2007.

That required me reading those numbers to the guy in India. I wasn't sure if the purchased key was good for 2 computers, or my purchased key gave me 1 computer, but I'd have to call to get the second authorized. I just followed directions

This is embarrassing--- I thought I checked everything which would cause this problem. But the one thing I didn't check was where the problem was. My Firewall. Once Streets & Trips was enabled to go thru, all works as it should. I got the update today the normal way.
