Eathmate GPS doesn't work with Streets & Trips on Windows 7 64 bit

What's with Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010? The software works great, but my DeLorme Street Atlas GPS won't work on 64 bit Windows 7. Street Atlas 2010 works OK! I use Streets & Trips to find address and Street Atlas to navigate and find phone #'s. Would like to try Streets & Trips for navigating.

The special program from Delorme that allows Eathmate GPS devices to output data to a COM port do not work with any version of 64 bit Windows. Delorme has said they are not expecting to update it. Therefore you will not be able to get that combination to work on your 64 bit computer.

The easy solution is to get a new GPS such as a GlobalSat BU-353. It will work fine with either of those programs. In fact, with the assistance of XPort or GPS Gate, you could run both of them at the same time with the new GPS.

From what I could see on the XPort web site, you have to pay $24 for a special license to use XPort on Windows 7 x64. They say that Microsoft charges them about $400 to use their software on Win 7 x64.

Sorry I bought an x64 machine.

It is so hard not to buy a 64 bit machine these days. I'm not sure what the reasoning is.

Is the problem just with the receiver? I just bought Streets & Trips 2010 With GPS Locator to use on a PC with Windows 7 64-bit and it says "64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server excluded." I went ahead and bought it thinking I should still be able to run it in Windows XP Mode (the Windows 7 "virtual XP machine"). Since I plan to buy a Garmin GPS anyway, perhaps that won't be necessary, if the software itself will run under a 64-bit OS and, as I understand it, Garmin devices that are on the "compatible" list will send coordinate data to the PC (I think).

Thanks,

Lou

Windows 7 64 bit is not XP 64 bit or Windows Server 64 bit. The GPS with S&T should work fine once Win 7 installs the appropriate driver. You needn't bother with XP mode.

The only Garmin GPS that will work directly with Streets and Trips is the Bluetooth 10x. If you consider buying Garmin Mobile PC with a GPS, you will have several problems to overcome. Although GPS Gate can provide the appropriate data from a 20x to operate S&T, that version of Mobile PC won't work with GPS Gate. Mobile PC Deluxe only works with the GPS that comes with it and it must be connected directly (i.e. no GPS Gate).

Oh, I thought the problem was the 64-bit OS, of whatever flavor. Good to know that doesn't apply to Win7.

You lost me a bit on the other stuff. If this receiver and S&T will work under Win764-bit then I don;t need a GPS to provide positioning data. And I don't plan to buy Garmin Mobile PC because I just bought Streets & Trips. I do plan to buy a stand-alone Garmin GPS (one that is on the Streets & Trips compatibility list, perhaps the NUVI 1350T or 1450T) and as I understand it I can send my trip data from S&T to the Garmin.

Thanks!

Sorry for my confusion!

No problem, I appreciate the help and advice! I have never used trip planning software before and have limited experience with a GPS.

This exculpatory sentence may have been written before Win 7 64 was released and I would not infer that MSFT was saying that it would be OK with Win 7 64. Perhaps a call to MSFT can resolve this for you.

Streets & Trips 2010 does work with Windows 7 64 bit. I have it running on my laptop.
