USB GPS receiver recommendation for Dell netbook?
cdong
Hi all,

I tried to look for it, but can't seem to find a list of GPS receivers. I'm pretty new to this, so bear with me.

I'm going on a trip to the UK, and planning to buy a Dell 10" netbook. One of the things I'd want to use it for is navigation when driving around the English countryside.

What's a good USB GPS receiver, if at all possible, something less than $50?

Once I'm done with the trip, I'll be using it here in the States with Microsoft Streets and Trips.

Any recommendation or comments are greatly appreciated!

We like the GlobalSat BU-353 as it is versatile. The USB cord is permanently attached so you can't lose it or try plugging the GPS module directly into the USB port. It will usually reach from your laptop mounting location to a good sky view location. It is also magnetic and waterproof for use in a variety of situations. The SirfStar III electronics are a good all around GPS module. If you check your post, there is a link to Amazon with a selection of receivers but other sources are available. It works fine directly with most navigation programs including AutoRoute 2010 and Streets & Trips 2010.

You might also consider buying S&T with the included GPS. It is good and works with AR as well.

Thanks Terry! I went ahead and bought the BU-353. Now I just need to find a place to buy the Europe version of AutoRoute.

After reading this forum some more, I think I kind of like the Garmin Mobile PC software. Does the GlobalSat BU-353 work with this software as well?

As long as you buy the software-only version, it will work with the BU-353. The version that comes with a GPS, either USB 20x or Bluetooth 10x only works with the GPS that is included. The problem is, if you are interested in using Garmin Mobile PC in Europe, you would need a European map set to go with the North American one included. The European map will only unlock to the GPS packaged with Mobile PC.

Of course, you could buy 2 copies of Mobile PC software-only, one with each map set. Each of those would work with the BU-353. Whether you could install them both on the same computer has not come up before; probably not.

Wait... so I can't buy the software-only version and then buy the Europe map to add in it?
tcassidy
No, because the European map is locked and requires a GPS to unlock to. The software version does not qualify; in fact it will not work with any locked maps even if you have a code.

The other problem is you can not buy updates for it, either yearly or lifetime, because it only works with the maps supplied (and other maps that are not locked such as Metroguide Canada, Topo Canada and Topo US).

Ok thanks Terry. I guess Microsoft AutoRoute is what I'll be getting.

But in fairness, buying the new version of Mobile PC with new maps is actually cheaper than buying the map update DVD alone. The real issue is that the software-only version does not qualify for the lifetime map updates which are the cheapest of all options for keeping your maps up to date.

And, of course, that you can't add locked maps for other locations like adding Europe to the North America version or vice versa .. or Australia to either one.
