Place names don't come up consistently when zooming / panning in Garmin Mobile PC
xuraax
Hi,

I like to use the "Browse Map" option when planning to visualize the area where I want to go.

For some reason the place names do not come up consistently when I am zooming and/or panning the maps.

Is this a bug in the software or is there a setting to follow?

I am using Garmin Mobile PC version 5.00.60 on an MSI Netbook.

The software is somewhat smart about how and where to display things on the map. It will try to create a display that doesn't obscure things that might be important. That might be what you are running into. If a label displays at a certain zoom level but not at another, or doesn't display when the map is in one position but does display when you pan it to a different position, it's likely just the drawing priorities that you are encountering as the software tries to make the most useful display for you.

As far as this part of the program goes, I am not sure I would call it "smart". Sometimes half the map remains empty.

The rest of the program is quite good though.

Mobile PC assumes you are only interested in getting from Point A to Point B, and like Ken says it will display only what it thinks may be important at any particular zoom level. For this reason I only use Mobile PC when I need to get to Point B. If you like to see everything, pretty much all the time, then perhaps you would like Microsoft Streets & Trips better. Mobile PC is "smart" in that it keeps you less distracted, which makes it ideal if you are the driver AND the navigator.
Could you post a screenshot, just in case there is a problem?

A few years back, I recall having an issue with another mapping software. It was displaying street names only in the lower 2/3 of the screen. I first assumed it was an issue with the pre-release version of the brand new software, but at the end I found out it was an issue with my own laptop.

What you are referring to is another area of the program ( the main actually ) were I confirm MobilePC works pretty well.

This problem shows itself when you do

My poor old eyes can't make out if you are at 8km zoom altitude or 8mi. But either way, what you are seeing looks about right, depending on what you have the map detail setting at.

SETTINGS > MAP > Map Detail.

Try changing it to MORE or MOST and see if that makes you happier.

Ken,

thanks for your prompt reply. the scale is 8km. if you look at the top middle of the shot you will see "N18". There, there is a big city, at least as big as the one at the middle bottom of the picture and this should have been visible.

Here is another shot of the London area taken with DETAIL set to MOST where you can see there are no place names at all in the centre of the shot which depicts LONDON itself.

Here is my map of the Seattle, WA area zoomed to 5mi which is about 8km. Detail is also set to MOST.
