Streets, Hiking Topo, and Aviation GPS software for laptop needed
Gus
I have no hardware/software currently. Looking for something multi-purpose. Streets, hiking Topo, Aviation.

I know I cannot officially use a lot of the common products for aviation navigation use, but was hoping for non-official/general usage with aviation charts. I'm just looking for a moving map with the sectional overlay that a passenger could use or for VFR use as 'entertainment'. I'm hoping for something that could track history of the flight as well as for navigation to multiple waypoints. I'm unaware of where I may be able to pick up free sectionals for laptop use so feel free to comment on sources or alternate maps.

I've also got a few coordinates to locate out in the woods while hiking around, so topo maps would be a useful addition. Is there a way to switch my mapset with any existing software such as Streets & Trips, Street Atlas, etc, so I only have to purchase 1 app?

Suggestions for a receiver also welcomed. My offhand thought is that Bluetooth enabled would be best, but it appears that for most of the apps such as GooPS, etc, I'd need to have USB capability also.

And finally, on a slightly different subject. Are many folks using their cell phones to connect to their laptop for providing the GPS info via an app on the phone (ie: droid)

Thanks tons for the input!

Hello and welcome.

I'm not a pilot, but an offroader running similar to what you seek.

I'm running a Bluetooth GPS receiver using Franson GPS Gate to operate MS Streets&Trips, Garmin Topo2010 and Google Earth simultaneously. I tethered my Droid via USB to the laptop for Internet to run Google Earth with PDAnet.

I would think satellite view in Google Earth would be close to what your looking for.

Anyone chime in if I'm off?
