What I need to make a laptop Garmin GPS work with Garmin Bluecharts?
Armed_101
Hi, I am new to the site, and have found it to be extremely useful! But unfortunately I still don't understand what I need to make a laptop Garmin GPS work with Garmin Bluecharts G2, or if this is possible at all. I know that the regular Bluecharts, that is offered as a download or CD, is possible.

If you could provide me a list of the things that I need that would greatly be appreciated!

What my plan is to have a small laptop for my mobile PC business that I could have for GPS for street navigation and also for navigating the Texas coast inshore as well as offshore.

Any input would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!

As far as I can tell, BlueChart G2 and Vision are available on SD card for Garmin devices only. They are not available for laptop use with programs such as nRoute and Mobile PC.

What is the best way to go for a Laptop GPS that I want both good ocean maps and street maps? Hardware? Software? What has the best quality?

Garmin no longer provides BlueCharts on CD, and they have also discontinued the nRoute program. I still use these for on-the-water laptop navigation. As Terry has said, since you have the BlueCharts G2 there is nothing you can do with the chart data on a laptop.

However, since you are in Texas, you can get the NOAA raster and vector chart data for free, and use a program like PolarView NS. It's free for viewing and plotting but on-the-water navigation requires a $40 registration fee.

You didn't say what Garmin GPS you have, but to make it work with a program such as PolarView you just need the free Garmin program called "Spanner". It works fine with my Garmin GPSMap 76CSx. GPSGate is surely better, but Spanner is free and seems to work fine.

I'm really annoyed with Garmin about all of this. I paid for PolarView and used it for a recent trip to the San Juan Islands, but on Canada I would have to buy the vector data from the CHS and it would cost me $1500 for the vector and raster charts for the west coast of Canada. And, this would only give me updates for one year. To get more updates I'd have to pay $1500 again. PolarView does support copy-protected chart data such as S-63 ENC. The two free programs I found on SourceForge do not. PolarView runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
