Advice for UMPC GPS software purchase
scoilt
Hello,

Advice for UMPC GPS software purchase

I’m looking at purchasing a Viliv x710 (touch screen UMPC running Windows 7 with a built-in GPS – 1GB RAM, 32GB SSD and SDHC expansion slot, 3G modem – 1024x600 screen resolution) and want to pick up some GPS software for it.

My favorite personal use was my old HP iPAQ 310 that had iGo 8 on it (iGo is not available for PC – as far as I know). I’m seriously considering either iGuidance (waiting until the 2010 version comes out this summer) or Garmin Mobile PC. I like Garmin Mobile PC’s lay out, but I like iGuidance’s POI interaction. I want to say Garmin, but from what I’ve seen, Garmin Mobile PC doesn’t display POIs while navigating/driving (you have to search?) whereas iGuidance shows them while navigating/driving and you can touch them to bring up information (name/type of POI/phone number/etc.). For this reason I’m leaning toward iGuidance.

Am I correct in stating that Garmin Mobile PC doesn’t show POI’s on the map while driving or navigating en route?
Also, with either of these take advantage of the 3G modem (this will be online while driving)? For instance, traffic updates, construction updates, weather, etc. I looks like Garmin does some of this?
Any corrections or other suggestions?

Thanks

I run a Viliv S5 and I am very happy with Streets & Trips 2010 on it. I know nothing about Garmin, so I cannot make a comparison.

Hi Scoilt, and welcome to the forum. I think both, iGuidance and Garmin Mobile PC, would work just fine, as well as most any program. I'm looking forward to the new iGuidance 4.2, and hopefully we will hear some news of it being released very soon.

I'm not able to check the POIs for you at the moment. I seldom use that feature, so I don't even remember...

iGuidance 2009 will let you get more information on displayed POIs while travelling. Mobile PC does not show POIs nor allow you to get information on displayed favourites. Also, if the internal GPS is similar to the one in the V5, it will not work with Mobile PC. As to why not, nobody seems to know.

I erred about POIs. Mobile PC will show them if you select that option. To get more information, you use the Browse map button (Enter), highlight the POI and select Point Information (F2).

Here is what it looks like in Mobile PC.

I have a Viliv S5. My favorite navigation software are Automapa (Polish) and PC Navigator (Czech). Unfortunately Automapa only offers Europe, I think you're interested in USA. But PC Navigator is also available for USA.

I don't like Garmin. It is not well suited for a UMPC and difficult to use. I haven't found out how to plan a route, sometimes it freezes and doesn't work out-of-box with Viliv's internal GPS module (both Automapa and PC Navigator work well). You have to use a virtual COM port and redirect the GPS using GPSGate or similar software.
