I am trying to install Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010 on a Vista machine, but get this error message:

Did you get this error during the installation process or on first launch?
Have you tried to fix it with a re-install or any other methods?
You might try things like running setup_st.exe as an administrator and/or turning UAC off to see if that helps.

Yes, I am getting this message when I first attempt to install it. What does UAC stand for.

UAC is User Account Control. It is that function that brings up a box every time you try to install something and asks you if you really want to do that. It can cause issues with some installs under certain conditions.

One of the easy ways to turn it off (and on) is type msconfig in the start search box and press enter. When you see the System Configuration window, choose the Tools tab.Choose Disable UAC from the list, click the Launch button and restart the computer. Try your install again and see if that helps.

If you want to restart UAC, it is in the same place called Enable UAC.

I tried that and I still get the error message: Error 1316. An error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\data.msi

Any other ideas?

There is a mention of that error here with a reference to a clean up tool from Microsoft for failed installations. Maybe that is your situation and the tool could help.
