Is Garmin nRoute compatible with City Navigator North America NT 2010 DVD?
AllenMaloney
I have been fiddling around with Garmin Mobile PC with a 10x GPS. Nice program, but I came to GPS with nRoute, and I just love it, and I guess I am one of the dinosaur out there to whom changes come with difficulty. Now don't get me wrong, I'll still fiddle with Mobile PC from time to time, and I might come to feel it one of these day, but today is not the day.

But what I really want is to get a set a map that I can use with nRoute. Now my understanding is that I need a Mapsource compatible set of map. I also like the program that Garmin has with NT maps where you can buy a life-time upgrade program.

I have in my sight the following map package:
City Navigator North America NT 2010 - DVD P/N 010-10816-00

Since now Garmin only peddles Mobile PC and the 10x GPS, there are no mention of compatibility of a 10x with this product.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion fellow navigator!
The question is simple, do you believe that this map package would allow me to use my 10x with nRoute ?

The problem has nothing to do with the 10x. It just provides the GPS data and doesn't care what map you use. The problem is Garmin has changed the map format, probably to make it a smaller file, and nRoute won't see it.

There is a program called MapReverseConverter that can change it to an appropriate format but you must email the author for a copy. It will convert the new format map file to one usable with nRoute and you can unlock that to your 10x.

JaVaWa GPS-tools | Use City Navigator Europe NT with MapSource 6.13.7

BTW check to see if CNNA NT 2011 is available. It has been released for the Nuvis.

Mr tcassidy,

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried MapReverseConverter and indeed converted the map. The problem is with the unlocking process. Mapsource offers me to connect on-line to the Garmin site, and there I even get a message ''Successfully unlocked map(s) for device''. But no joy! The map is still unlocked in Mapsource.

The online unlock does not work for Windows 7 (maybe not Vista either). Ken has pointed out you can go to the other tab in Map Product Manager called 'Unlock Regions' and choose the 'Add' button. There you can type in your 25 character unlock code.

I am still using Windows XP SP3 (still the dinosaur issue, eh eh), so it should not be an issue related to Vista nor Windows 7.

OK this what I got from MyGarmin regarding this map:
City Navigator North America NT 2011.10, US & Canada, April 10
Code: 8WxxxxxxX
Unlock Code: HBxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxHZ9
Date Unlocked: May 7, 2010 .
Unlock,GMPC SW Support
Code: 9xxxxx1
Unlock Code: B2xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxYHP
Date Unlocked: May 07, 2010
If I understood correctly Ken's instructions, I have entered these two 25-digit codes in the unlock region tab.

The map is still locked in Mapsource

The mention of GMPC confuses me. Do you have another Garmin GPS besides the 10x? Is the map already unlocked to GMPC with the 10x or another device such as the 20x?

After you converted the map to the old format using MRC, did you remove or rename the original .gmap folder? MapSource might be confused with 2 references to that map.

The map is already unlocked to Garmin Mobile PC with a 10 x
tcassidy
So! Did you remove or rename the gmap folder at 'Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps.

Terry,
I don't follow you
Let's recap
The map is unlocked with Mobile PC and it works fine.
I have used ''MapReverseConverter'' to generate a compatible version of the map in MapSource so I can eventually use it in nRoute (this is the ultimate goal).
The map is indeed available in map source but shows as locked
I'm trying to unlocked this map.
I don't understand the question about ''removing or renaming the gmap folder at 'Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps''

The original copy of the map you installed is the new format not compatible with nRoute. It is installed at the location I listed in a folder with a gmap extension. MRC uses the information in that folder to generate a new folder with files that nRoute can read and puts a reference in the registry. MapSource can access both the original data in the gmap folder and the MRC folder referenced in the registry. this can confuse MapSource leading to a variety of issues possibly including the one you are experiencing.

Since MapSource will work fine with the files MRC produced, the easiest way to prevent problems is rename the gmap folder or move it somewhere MapSource can't see it.

Mobile PC does not use these files at all. It uses gmapprom, gmapsupp, gmapbmap image files stored in its own folder.

Oh, you haven't used MRC yet? Then I don't know why it won't unlock. When I had that problem with it on a Windows 7 computer and online unlocking, I contacted Garmin and they sent me a file to unlock it. I didn't know about Ken's information and it had worked fine on an XP computer. It was a download for a Nuvi though, not the DVD.

Did you try the other option on the online unlocking screen? Retrieve unlocks or something like that. It might work or is at least worth a try.

Can we come back to the original question I have asked at the top of this post:
Is Garmin nRoute compatible with City Navigator North America NT 2010 DVD
(DVD P/N 010-10816-00) ?
tcassidy
No.

Not without running it through the MapReverseConverter, No.
