Can't import routes from MapSource to Garmin Mobile PC
bighopper
Terry,
I'm using v5.00.60. I haven't tried .70 because of the 'crashing problem' & as I'm using my UMPC on my BMW I didn't want to have to stop & restart Mobile PC all the time.
Maybe I'll give it a try while I'm still sitting in the -20C weather here in Edmonchuck & see how it goes in the car over the next couple of months. I can always revert back to .60 if it's bad.

Thanks Again for your help Terry.

As a further test, I copied the srte.nvm file created in the 5.00.70 version and pasted it into the 5.00.60 one on the other computer. GMPC started ok and the route looks good. Maybe you could get your routes in order and transfer them (maybe one at a time) while in 5.00.70 and then revert to 5.00.60 if necessary.

I am attaching a zip file which includes both routes. Unzip it and place the resulting file (GARMIN_SRTE.NVM) in the approriate folder if you feel adventuresome. However, any existing routes you have will magically disappear so be warned. You can always back up or rename the existing file with the same name first for safety sake.

For XP, the location is C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\GARMIN\GarminMobilePC

BTW, I didn't test it on the other computer after sending both routes at once from MapSource but it looks OK in 5.00.70!!

Thanks Terry.

BUT it looks like I am one of those systems that can't run .70. After installing, running Mobile PC would load then shut down & I can't re-run till I reboot! So I can't use it at all.

Reinstalled .60 & now it won't run at all. So I guess I'll do a fresh install & see what happens.

I can't say I have ever had that problem with .70 but have reverted to .60 on several systems for other reasons. The best way is often as you stated; remove the product using add/remove and then a fresh installation. Upgrade as necessary.

Once you have .60 working again, you can try the route file I created to see if it works for you.

I tried that srte file on my GMPC 5.00.60 computer after first renaming the existing one. The routes look ok and the points you plotted seem to have come through good. Not sure about the names but renaming each route is easy enough.

Same problem here with 5.00.60g of Mobile PC. I don't think I have .70 installed on anything.

Ken, did you try the srte file I created? I certainly wouldn't want to create a route that complicated in Mobile PC although I suppose it is doable.

I am going to reinstall GMPC on one computer and upgrade to an older version such as .30 (my DVD is .00). I'll check if .60 is the problem.

Sorry I didn't get back quicker. I'm watching the Brier so not paying as much attention to the computer. Yes, I tried it in 5.00.60g and it works a treat.

I tried importing one of those routes (the long one) with both .30 and .50 with no success. It says something when it starts but the route has no start, stop or intermediate points - not much use. Have you tried something simpler?

I was thinking that it maybe has something to do with the size of the route, as I had imported a 2000Klm route with no problem before I did the long route.
Once I have reinstalled Mobile PC I'm going to try a shortened route of the 6000Klm route & see what happens.

I've transferred routes from Mapsource to all versions of Mobile PC. There have been issues with route transfers through them all. But if they transferred, they transfered properly. I think they did quite a bit of work on routes for .70. It was the only version where I actually had some serious exchanges with Garmin about details of the problems I was reporting and received confirmation on each of the cases when they were able to reproduce or else needed additional information to reproduce.

Once the curling game is over I'll install Mobile PC on my other desktop and upgrade it to .70. There are a number of issues with it but perhaps we can provide a route conversion service. Think we could make any money at it??

The only problem is using current.gpx does not work as an entry point. You have to use srte and that means any existing saved routes would be gone. You need a way to extract the existing saved routes, adding new and then putting the whole thing back!!

I did check the nvm file to see if it could be opened in notepad but it is not text friendly.

You could open current.gpx in MapSource (or send from GMPC) and add the routes to the result. However, you can't just put the resulting gpx file back. Even if you rename it to current.gpx, GMPC doesn't seem to recognize the additions. Anyway, that was what I found in previous testing. Correct me if I missed something.

BTW sending to MapSource from GMPC on one of my Win7 machines doesn't work so I'm doing most of this testing on a Vista laptop and XP desktop.
