I see no reason not to use the new .GMAP layout going forward, assuming you can create that layout with the available tools. All new versions of Mapsource and Basecamp understand them.

For those who wish to use nRoute and/or older versions of Mapsource or similar tools, MapReverseConverter is simple to use.

It's intended to convert your maps for the Mac, but I think it's just a matter of installing them in the right place to use on Windows. I need to take some time and dig deeper into this topic one day...

As far as Win7 (or Vista) is concerned, the .gmap folder created or a shortcut to it must be placed in C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps. For XP, that is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Aplication Data\GARMIN\Maps

Thank you very much everyone for your help! Just a quick check on a couple of points:

I have several City Navigator NT maps on my computer. The only one I need to see in nRoute is CN Australia/NZ. Do I need to convert all my CN maps or just the one I want to use with nRoute?

Every time I do a lifetime update, MapSource will be updated to whatever the latest version is. Do I need to have MapSource version 6.13.7 for nRoute to work OK or will nRoute pick up and display the converted CN Aust/NZ map regardless of the MapSource version?

Oh - and 1 more, in making the map for nRoute, in MapReverseConverter, do I tick the "Don't use TYP file" check box? Thanks again.

Only convert the ones you want to use with nRoute.

You needn't use MapSource 6.13.7 or even have it on your computer. The converted maps will work fine with the latest version of MapSource. MapSource is never updated with a map update. In fact, Garmin has discontinued MapSource so whatever the latest version is will be fine.

The Typ file affects maps other than Garmin as far as I can see. I would ignore that option.

Nope. Mapsource will never update automatically.

Mapsource is the program you use to manage the maps and do travel planning. It has never updated automatically.

The Lifetime Updates only update the maps.

I hope this helps dispel the confusion between Mapsource - the program - and the fact that Garmin also sticks the Mapsource name on many of their map products.

For whatever it's worth, there will no longer be any new versions of Mapsource - the program. It is officially dead. Basecamp is the program that Garmin is focusing on for the future for managing/installing maps and travel planning.

Once the maps are in the right folder/file layout and the correct registry entries are in place, nRoute will find the maps just fine without Mapsource 6.13.7.

Darn. Is there a specific order one should load this stuff as I still get the dreaded registry error. The steps I've used on two XP computer's are:

Delete every nroute entry from the registry (using the Find function to search for nroute)
Use MRC on the City Navigator Aust/NZ map.
Target folder in MRC is: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps\
Install nRoute version 2.1
Install nRoute version 2.7.6
Then try to run nRoute - but the registry error appears straight away.

There will be some simple solution to this, the hard part is finding it. Is the above method OK?

I can't understand anything you have done. Why delete all the nRoute entries when it was pointed out earlier the registry error message is usually caused by a faulty map. It was suggested you remove those by using the Windows uninstaller. If that is not possible, all maps that nRoute can see are listed at HKLM\Software\Garmin\MapSource\Families in the registry.

All versions of nRoute are complete so there is no need to install v2.1.

Also, I wouldn't pick that target location for MRC. Although it doesn't matter where you put them, that particular folder is where the original, untranslated map would be. I would create a folder such as C:\Garmin\Maps and have MRC place the converted maps there. That will reduce any confusion between the unconverted map files and the converted map files.

I think the procedure should be:

Install and test nRoute 2.76. Any registry errors will probably be due to maps you already have - Check for those with MapSource and fix or remove as necessary.

Install your NZ NT maps and unlock them to your device in your favourite version of MapSource . Ensure they display properly.

Run MRC with the source as you listed above and a target of C:\Garmin\Maps or something similar.

Run nRoute and check if the NZ maps display properly.
