Garmin Mobile PC GPS 10x not seen by Windows Vista
Muffinman
Bought the Garmin Mobile PC 10x bundle to use with my Toshiba satellite with Vista. I downloaded the DVD, charge the receiver, tried to link it, and it just never goes pass the search screen. Any tips?

Does your laptop have Bluetooth? Mobile PC can use the Bluetooth stack built in to Microsort, the Broadcom stack or the Toshiba stack. It can't see the Bluesoleil Bluetooth stack though. By 'downloaded the DVD', I assume you mean you installed Mobile PC on the laptop

Yes it is Bluetooth enabled, I tried to link them, but with no luck. I turn on the 10x have a steady blinking blue lite, search for Bluetooth device and the computer does not see it.

Although Mobile PC doesn't need you to add it to Bluetooth devices, you should still be able to find it as a Bluetooth device. I would pull the battery on the 10x and let it reset and then put the battery back in and power it up again. Restart your computer and try locating the 10x again. If that doesn't work, your 10x may be faulty.

Thanks Terry, it didn't work, I will give Garmin a call tomorrow.

Do you have any other Bluetooth devices to confirm your computer Bluetooth works? Keyboard, mouse, headset, cell maybe.

It picks up the wireless modem no problem.

Glad you had something else to test the Bluetooth with. Sure sounds like a faulty 10x then!!

Rather it would the computer, I heard horror stories about getting Garmin to replace units. I hope you have a great fourth!

Sorry, I'm in Canada. We already had our holiday on Thursday. But don't let that put a damper on yours. I'm sure you can handle Garmin.

Garmin wrote me back saying that Mobile PC has lots of problems with Toshiba laptops and there is no fix. They told me to buy a external bluetooth adapter and try again. Does this sound right?

They may be commenting on the Toshiba Bluetooth stack. I know it works directly with Mobile PC and actually have it on 2 devices. I have no experience using it with Windows 7 though and don't have a copy of Mobile PC that had a 10x with it. My 10x is from a previous product and I have Mobile PC software version.

If your computer is using the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, it might be reasonable to buy a cheap dongle to test the theory. If it is using the Microsoft stack, they are on the wrong track.

I included a screen shot of each from Device Manager. This might help you identify which one you have.

Clicking on the BT icon in the notification bar and 'Bluetooth Settings' shows the Toshiba information quite clearly but this is XP. I'm not sure what it looks like in Windows 7. For Microsoft the selection is 'Show Bluetooth Devices'.

I still think it should be able to find the 10x using Add a Device or New Connection. As you can't, I think that points to the 10x. Can you test it elsewhere?

Thanks Terry, they were talking about Toshiba's stack. I will buy a cheap doogle and try again. I am using Vista and will check when I get home.
