I would like to see Streets and Trips incorporate some sort of mini-application to calculated average speed for a given route segment using Driving Directions data.
Right now, I use a programmable calculator (HP-19B II) on which I have entered the following simple formula:
MPH=(MI' -MI")/(HRS(T')-HRS(T")),
where MPH=miles per hour, MI'=starting mile, MI"=ending mile, T'=starting time, and T"=ending time.
It works great. I can pick any pair of driving directions and calculate the average speed and give it a reasonableness test. I can also change any variable of the formula to see the effect on the other variables. For instance, if I want to evaluate the effect of slowing down on my projected arrival time, I can enter a slower MPH rate and it will compute a new T" time, or vice versa. In this way, I do not have to mess with driving speeds in Route Options.
Of course, the formula can be transposed to calculate kilometers per hour.
I would like to see this sort of functionality right in Streets & Trips and Autoroute so that I do not have to carry my calculator.
