ALK CoPilot GPS receiver compatibility with other programs?
wahoo50
Have used about 6 versions of ALK Copilot on my laptop. My new laptop is 64 bit, therefore ALK CoPilot won't work. My question is - is there a program I can download that will run on a 64 bit computer along with the satellite receiver I received with Copilot?

Most navigation products I have tried including Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010, Delorme Street Atlas 2010, Garmin Mobile PC and iNav iGuidance 2009 work with Windows 7 64 bit. However, you will need to determine whether a 64 bit USB-serial driver is available for your GPS receiver. It might be safer to buy a package of the navigation software that interests you which includes a GPS device. Your GPS is probably getting a little long in the tooth anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I have the Globalsat BU-353 receiver, just discovered to purchase it alone is less than $40. I have been paying big bucks for the CoPilot programs. Have had some problems causing a need for service, what I received was less than desirable. So I'd like to change to a different program. I usually have multiple sites to visit, CoPilot has an 'optimize' feature meaning they organize so there's no backtracking. Any suggestions?

The GlobalSat BU-353 is a great GPS, has 64 bit drivers available and will work with any other navigation program that accepts NMEA data. You might want to download the free trial of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010 to see if that will fill your requirements.

As a test I plugged my BU-353 into the Win 7 64 bit computer. It could not install drivers but gave me a message with a link to the site to download them and instructions on how to install them. I had it working within a couple of minutes.

Garmin Mobile PC will also work with the BU-353 and will run on a 64bit system. That's what I use on my laptop.
