Garmin Mobile PC with 10x Discontinued
Ken in Regina
I just got this response from Garmin Product Support to my question about when Mobile PC will be shipping with the City Navigator North America 2011 maps.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be more than happy to help you with this. The 2011 Mobile PC should be shipping in the near future.

Thanks Ken. That's exactly what I wanted to know about MS, BC and NG. The BS works, too. I like the cost of doing bidness here.

Yeah, the rendering would get to me. I don't have it quite as bad as Adrian Monk but . . .

Ted

Edit: Almost forgot. Thanks for the 2011 Map info from Garmin.

Ted, thanks for the source! I couldn't resist the price and ordered one. Mine arrived this morning even with USPS, border crossing and Express Post, a new record! Tracking showed it probably originated in California. Part of the quick delivery was because it wasn't stopped at customs so I save HST, handling and a 3 day wait!!!

Anyway, when registered it says there is no update available and the internal map is CNNANT 2010.1 as Ken suggested. Not quite what I was expecting so maybe they aren't a registered Garmin dealer.

Don't forget to make a note of the serial number before you insert the battery.

That's an insane price!! If you scroll down a bit you see that the GPS10x by itself is twice as much as Mobile PC with maps and the 10x. If I didn't already have two perfectly good Bluetooth GPS receivers, including a 10x, I would jump all over it.

Yes, but I didn't have this particular combination. Its too bad it isn't elligible for an update as I wanted to see if the MapSource thingie applied in this case. Oh well, can't have everything!

I did a test install on my Win 7 64 bit computer (after backing it up and removing the other version) with no problems. It is v5.00.60 and found the 10x in about 3 minutes. I am not impressed with the time it takes to find the 10x each time GMPC is started though. It takes over a minute as it scans attached first. You would think it could learn after the first time. Strange, as the software version generally can find the 10x way faster as it knows where to look.

I upgraded to 5.00.70 and the problem remained. However, it started scanning Bluetooth first every second time I started the program and was very quick. As I was sure I had seen this before but with 5.00.60, I changed it back again and now it is quick to find the 10x (under 6 seconds) every second time I start the program. Is that confusing enough?

I get the impression this package is not eligible for the lifetime maps either. I can't get MyGarmin to find the device and when I enter the serial number, it says the maps are already up to date. I will ask Garmin though as I can't believe it when they don't want to sell me something.

My jaws are a little tight. I'm still waiting for mine.

My order shipped from Everett, Wash. Just outside Seattle and the home of Boeing if I remember correctly (doesn't happen as often as it used to). Has one of the longest runways on the Left Coast.

Anyhoo it's in Houston and will probably get to Beaumont tonight. Delivery sked for tomorrow before 3 PM CST. And you already have yours. ARRGGG.

What really ticks me off is no updates. I have a BU-353 and a BT-Q818X. I didn't need another GPS either. The only reason I wanted the bundle was the lifetime update qualification. Terry is there a chance the bundle qualifies for lifetime but not an update at registration/activation?

And I thought I had my eyes wide open. Murphy sits on my left shoulder and I can't get him off.

What I have tried so far points to it not being eligible for updates of any kind. I don't understand why this is the case but I can't get anywhere with the registered product at MyGarmin. Who knows..maybe the 10x version is the same as the software version but I doubt it. As I said, I have dropped Garmin an email to clarify this as they always want to sell something. Maybe I'll phone them tomorrow as well.

I can always borrow a 20x from my son-in-law and modify the setup that way but I'm not that interested in lifetime updates. I already get them for my 2 Nuvis. I was more interested in how the update download looked compared to the Nuvi.

Still, the price is unbeatable. You get the 10x for free and the only loss is the software won't work with your other GPS.

Are you sure it shipped from Everett. I took a look at my USPS tracking which started Sunday much to my surprise. It showed Los Angeles as the take off point. Everett was just where the company maintains an address. If they had them there it is only a hop skip and jump to the BC border so I can't see them shipping from California.

I am surprised as you about the speed of the delivery. It usually takes a week to get something from the US even if it doesn't get held up at customs. Basically it was one day to customs, 8 hour delay and Canadian Postal Express to here the next morning, records on all fronts!!

Don't we all know they aren't up to date? That "Discontinued" thing at Amazon still bugs me.

Are you gonna call or ask via email? I only ask because if this package doesn't qualify I think I might return it without opening the box.

Or not. It is a good price.

I think I might get a BT Touchpad/Keyboard. (I've still got my Steelie if anybody remembers playing Keepsies. ) It should feel right at home on my console.

Yeah I've got problems. Every time I get a little depressed I have to buy something.

You think you have boredom issues! I have 4 Bluetooth keyboards of various sizes. And this is my 5th copy of Mobile PC, 2 with 20x (gave them away to family), 2 software only and this one.

Now there's a good idea! It never crossed my mind to give it to someone with no passion for updates.

Thanks, Terry

Your copy will already have seen the entire US, if only from a plane!
