Garmin Mobile PC with 10x Discontinued
john headley
Thankyou Ken, I will look in mygarmin. When I google garmin mobile pc europe it appears as a stand alone program, so I hope you understand my confusion, (cost 45 pounds at amazon uk) If it is stand alone and has nks again, john h

When I checked Garmin, strangley they do not offer any European maps for my Mobile PC. This is not what I was expecting as we have heard from others that this is doable. Maybe it is because the product is discontinued.

You may have to contact Garmin and see if there is another approach you can use.

If you want to know all of the possibilities, there is another thread in here about this exact subject where all of the possible ways of doing both North America and Europe on Mobile PC were explored and most were tested. It turns out that the simplest way is to buy one of the hardware bundles, as you have and then buy the DVD mapset for the other continent.

It might be cheaper to buy the Europe version of Mobile PC just for the maps but if it's the software-only version you won't be able to use the maps on the hardware version you bought. And it will be very difficult to use the Garmin GPS with it.

If it's another hardware bundle, you will only be able to use the GPS that comes with it with that version and then you need to remember which GPS to use with which version of the program.

It's all very messy unless you just pretend that your copy of Mobile PC is actually a Nuvi which you can buy additional maps for. Except you use the serial number/unit ID of the GPS20x to register them to and get the unlock code for. If you do that, it's all pretty simple. Or at least as simple as Garmin stuff ever gets.

thanks Terry, I'm not sure my last post appeared correctly so I'll try to clarify/repeat. What I bought from amazon uk (45 uk pounds) is described as Garmin mobile pc europe maps only,( not software only) From reading on net it seems to me garmin mobile pc cannot exist as maps only and must include navigation software. If so, does it have same file/folder name and if so, can it exist on the same pc as north american version? I also tried Garmin support, (100%easier to deal with than TomTom or Navigon) but I don't think they understood my question. thanks, john h

Sounds like the 'software only' version with European maps to me. You would not be able to use that on the same computer as your other NA hardware version. You would also not be able to use the maps that came with it on your NA hardware version.

Thanks again Terry, I think you are right, I'll find out soon, May. jh. ps. EU maps I bought on ebay last year on sd card plugged into a 155w gps and worked fine but didn't like planning a trip from Vancouver to Paris, probably because of lack of ferries!

John, the "Maps Only" means that the product doesn't include the optional GPS receiver/antenna. It still includes the software program. It's the software+maps in one. Terry and Ken are correct.

Thanks Marvin, I do hope that is so. I think it must be and of course I hope it will recognise the gps rx. jh

Version 5.00.70 of Mobile PC Software-only version will probably recognize the GPS20x receiver. Older versions will not. If you do not receive version 5.00.70 from Amazon you can download the update for free from Garmin.

There is a modified version of v5.00.60 that should also recognize it. If you need it it's in another thread here.

Again many thanks Ken and to all of you, much more informative than Garmin! I doubt I can find out which version until I get there. Actually it is the 10x receiver I have. I'm expecting to have to uninstall the n/a version and hope they aren't one install only software. jh

The hardware version (the one you have with the 10x) can be reinstalled as many times as you want. However, the software version is locked to the one computer as soon as you unlock it. The license is renewable though. Garmin says every 6 months but I have found it can be shorter than that, sometimes only 3 months. Now they have discontinued the product, I don't know whether that will change or not.

You can actually back up the software version by saving some folders. I have done it but am not entirely clear which ones are truly important to the license. It involves the 3 GarminMobilePC folders at various locations depending on the o/s. You have to do it before reinstalling the hardware one though as that will modify those same folders.

Hello "Ken in Regina",

Way back in August of 2010 you said in post #30 in this thread:

The new rendering engine in versions post-6.13.7 only renders things in proper proportion near Olathe, Kansas (the center of the universe as Garmin knows it).

Changes were made in very recent versions to allow you to manually change the centre of the universe so you can get stuff rendered in proper proportion "locally". It was a welcome bandaid but it's no real solution.

Do you remember how you manually change the "centre of the universe"?

It would make a little project I'm working on much simpler if I could get the maps to display in the newest version of MapSource without the distortion I that version gives me up here at 46 north.

I could use version 6.13.7 to avoid distortion but I like the look of 6.16.3.0 better for what I'm doing. Mostly because 6.16.3.0 allows multiple routes to be shown at the same time on the map in different colours. I want the map to show 5 different routes, some overlapping, at the same time.

6.13.7 seems to just allow routes in one colour, purple.

Hi Ken,

I'll see if I can find it.

You change the projection angle by typing Ctrl-Alt-A and entering a custom projection angle.
