Streets and Trips: Should I buy now, or wait till version 2011?
coover
I am getting ready to take a long round trip from Southern California to New England and back with many stops on the way. I presently own Streets and Trips 2008 and had decided to upgrade to 2010. However, I have learned that MS will be bringing out version 2011 soon and wonder if I should download 2010 S & T and use the 60 day free trial until Streets and Trips 2011 comes out?

Are there parts of the free trial that are not available for use during the trial? Is there something I should know before doing this?

I will be using Streets and Trips and a Garmin 550c loaded with the latest 2011 maps.

No there are no parts of the Full Product that are not in the free trial. In the 60-day period, the only difference is that you get a pop-up screen as the program loads prompting for a license or to continue with the free trial, a one-click affair.

I don't see any downside to using the 60-day trial, except that I would be sure that the sixtieth day is after your trip is completed. You may not want to deal with purchasing a license when you are on your trip. Even if there is a 2011 version whilst still in the trial period, you probably will be able to switch to that, if you can manage the download.

Thanks Spades and Marvin,

The trip will take place between the middle of September and the middle of October. And I certainly wouldn't want trying to download 2011 on the trip. I do intend to purchase wireless internet service during that time, but the download limits are too small. In addition, I don't think McDonalds or Starbucks would appreciate my business for the length of time it would take for such a download (on their dime) at their establishments, so is there any chance that 2011 will not be available prior to the 15th of September?

15th of October. It's a 60-day trial, not a 30-day trial.

In previous years, Streets & Trips has come out anywhere between August and October. The trial becomes available for download immediately after release, and it then takes a couple of weeks for retail stores to stock up.

I've downloaded the 2010 trial, but will wait a few days to install. Thanks, everybody.

I've heard rumors that Streets & Trips 2011 might be a couple months late in releasing this year. My advise: Looks like Amazon has some killer deals...buy 2010 now.

Amazon's price $44.28 for S & T plus the GPS add-on is an excellent deal. However, I already have the add-on (with my 2008 version). I really want the most recent map version, so I will wait for the 2011 version before purchasing.
Larry
@coover - If you have the add-on stuff then you'd want the "green box" with no GPS hardware which is $27 at Amazon today! Wow! Your choice if you want to wait of course, but that is pretty cheap.

Larry, thanks for the "rumors." Hope this means it's a little bit bigger than a regular dot release. (I know, I know, you can't comment.)

Not arguing, but it appears this deal is over (at least for the Win 7 version).

I e-mailed The Microsoft Store today asking for the Streets & Trips 2011 release date. If I get an "official" reply I'll post it.

I'm doing an insurance replacement for a copy of 2009 w/ GPS that grew legs and disappeared a few months ago during a break-in . If 2011 is going to be out soon I just assume wait for it.

There is no special version of S&T 2010 for Win 7.

I didn't think so either; however Amazon lists a different "XP Version" at a lower price.

This is the response I received today from The Microsoft Store:

Currently, we do not have information about Streets & Trips 2011. I apologize for the inconvenience.
The mystery continues...

It's no mystery at all. Many software developers don't announce ETA for new versions of their products. Microsoft is one of them.
