Garmin nRoute shows no map datail when connected to GPS18
rboothroyd
Help,

I have been reading posts on this forum and understand that if I install nRoute and Bluechart Americas 2008 it *should* work as a real time navigator on my laptop with a GPS18 antenna.

Well it does ... almost. Everything seems to work just fine ... until I plug in the UPS GPS18. When the GPS18 is not plugged in Bluechart 2008 works just fine showing me all the regions I have unlocked in great detail. Then when I plug in the GPS18 and it acquires a sat link, poof all the detail is gone and it I completely lose the mapping.

If anyone could offer assistance on how to overcome this I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks
Richard

Are you at a location that's within the bounds of the chart?

You do not have the maps unlocked to the GPS18. nRoute will only show detail when it is connected to a Garmin GPS the maps are unlocked to. What device are your maps unlocked for?

I am not very familiar with either of those products. And, your symptoms are rather odd... One thing that comes to mind is that, when you plug in the GPS, the system is trying to call up a map for your current location and, for some reason, it can not find the right map. It will not take long for someone who is knowledgible to give you a better response.

Obviously, I was typing while others were responding!

They are unlocked for a Garmin NUVI 265WT

Hmmm, I am not on the water and the location from where I am getting the sat link would be outside the bounds as I am in a location about 70km from the water.

As I say though I can see it until I get a sat link ...

I can't see how you would resolve that as the 265WT - even if it is one of the Nuvis that will output GPS data in test mode - will not be seen by nRoute as it is the wrong data type. Do you own the 265WT?

Hi Terry,

The 265 is not useful for detail but I can upload waypoints from Bluechart and navigate using the waypoints and the "offroad" setting in the NUVI - crude but it got me where I wanted to go. Garmin's website says Bluechart is compatible with the 265 but as I found out only in a limited way.

This is why I subsequently purchased the GPS18 with nRoute (from "geekdeal.com" on eBay) so I could use my laptop to navigate with Bluechart.

Yes I own the 265 and all my other accessories and software are all legal copies I have purchased.

Then, as the legal owner of the products, you do have a solution. Get a copy of GPS Gate and let the wizard find your GPS 18. It will provide an output on a COM port specifically for nRoute labeled Garmin Emulator(Generic Device). Point nRoute at that COM port and your maps will work.

GPS Gate provides the appropriate data type for nRoute but doesn't pass the ID so nRoute will leave the unlocked maps displaying detail.

Terry - thanks for your help. I will give this a try this evening and let you know how it works out. Thanks again and have a good one!!

I realise GSP Gate has solved your problem but there was/is another solution. You are permitted to unlock your BlueCharts to two different GPS's as long as you own both of them. This is to provide some level of redundancy while navigating. Check with Garmin tech support if you are interested.

My BlueCharts are unlocked to both my GPSMap 76SCx and also to my GPS 20x which I use with nRoute on my laptop(s).

Good point, Ken. I forgot that Bluechart falls under the old Garmin rules.

Hi, this is slightly off topic, but I have Bluechart and Nroute on my laptop using a Garmin GPS 18x usb. I tried it on my boat yesterday and everything worked great. I was able to set waypoints and make routes and I appeared on the chart in realtime. The only problem was I was unable to activate a route. All the route features were grayed and unable to click on. Becase of this there was no time or distance to the next course chage or anything like that. Anyone have any ideas? If I should have started a new thread for this I'm sorry.

It would be very difficult for nRoute to guess how long it might take you to get from one point to the next. It doesn't know the speed you can make and there is no routing information on the water. This is not like a land mass where you follow fixed roads with speed limits. You're on your own for that.
