Backroad Mapbooks & Garmin Mobile PC : Can't unlock maps using unit ID
gogogadget
I am running Garmin Mobile PC, and can run City Navigator no problem. I downloaded and unlocked the Backroad Mapbook, and it shows as unlocked in Mapsource / Map Product Information. I don't see it in unlock regions tab.

When I try to transfer it to Mobile PC, I get an error in Mobile PC "Can't unlock maps using unit id #".

I even tried to save it to a flash drive and load it with the same error.

Anyone have any ideas?

You can not use maps that are lockable with Mobile PC software version. It does not matter if you have unlocked them. If you have the software version of Mobile PC (the version that does not include a Garmin GPS) you must use non locked maps such as Topo Canada.

So I already have the software only version of Garmin Mobile PC, Where can I download the deluxe version (or will I have to purchase it again?) What other programs work with Backroad Mapbooks besides Mobile PC? Backroad Mapbooks works great on my Rhino, just wanted to use it on my laptop as well with out too much expense.

There is an info on Backroad Mapbooks site about registering maps. There shouldn't be any problems to unlock a map for Mobile PC if you have DVD version of the map.

If you have SD version, then your unlock code is only valid for SD and Mapsource, Mobile PC won't be able to use this code.

That is not the case. The software version of Mobile PC will not work with any lockable maps such as Backroad Mapbooks as there is no GPS to unlock the maps to. You would have to have the hardware version of Mobile PC that comes with a GPS (USB 20x or BT 10x) and purchase an unlock code from Backroad Mapbooks to unlock to that GPS.

Press Settings -> About. You will find there Software Unit ID which is ID for unlocking maps. As far as I know this could be used on Backroad registration page.

You might try it with nRoute. That won't provide the special POI information but can show the roads. What are you using as a GPS for Mobile PC? nRoute may work with your Rhino as a GPS. For a regular GPS you would need GPS Gate as nRoute requires Garmin type data.

I haven't tried that so you may be right.

Well, I haven't tried it either

But Unit ID is exactly what you use when dealing with 3-rd party maps publishers. Only Garmin request serial number of GPS, since it has database of all devices.

According to the FAQ on the Backroad Mapbooks site it will not work with the software version of Mobile PC

11) Are Backroad GPS Maps compatible with Garmin Mobile PC?
Yes, but this will require the ‘deluxe’ version that comes with a Garmin GPS receiver to unlock the maps. (You can choose either a GPS20x USB receiver or a GPS10x Bluetooth receiver.) Note that the software only version of Garmin’s Mobile PC does not work with most of its own receivers and thus our maps will not be able to be unlocked.

Of course, they could be wrong too as the second part of that paragraph makes no sense!

When I registered with Backroads they didn't ask for a unit #, just the .unl file off the SD card. I then was given a unlock code and a download for the computer version which works with Mapsource.

Actually, they got that information from me. That's almost word for word what I told them.

I provided them with that information before 5.00.70 of Mobile PC was released. You may recall that all earlier versions refused to work with most Garmin GPS receivers. That problem was not corrected until v5.00.70.

I guess I should notify Backroad Mapbooks of the correction. I have neglected to do so because there are so many other issues with .70.

Perhaps I can get them to give me a test unlock code to see if the Unit ID will allow third-party maps to be unlocked to the software-only version of Mobile PC. I'll be heading out to BC again in a week or so, so I can test with the BC maps that I already have.

Every version of Mobile PC right back to 5.00.00 works just fine with Garmin GPS receivers. I have a BT GPS 10x and an old serial GPS 18 and have tried both with older versions. Whether the GPS 18 would work with versions newer than .30 I can't say. But the 10x works with all of them!

I was really hoping you would be able to test the software-only thing though as I suspect, but can't test, that it wouldn't.

I won't waste a bunch of bandwidth on this because we did a whole whack of testing, and writing, on just this subject way back. It's all pretty well documented in another thread or two in here. I reported the problem to Garmin at the time and they responded that the software-only version was using a table that only included older models but not any of the newer models.

Since then, I've been using my GPS10x and my eTrex Legend HCx to test to see if it was corrected. It was not until a recent version that that changed and Mobile PC started to recognize my Garmin GPS receivers. I thought it was 5.00.70 but it's possible that it might have been fixed in .60.

If the rain continues here so I can't get out on the golf course, perhaps I'll retest to see which version it got fixed. I've been planning to install .70 on my Windows 7 desktop anyway, and I have .60 on my XP Pro desktop.

I was sure you were able to get the 10x going before .60 came out but I do recall the PNDs had issues. Maybe these are semantics and you meant PNDs (or handhelds), as many people do, when you suggested that write up. I'll dig out my eMap as I have GMPC .30 on one XP desktop.
