u-Blox 5 GPS and Galileo receiver not recognized by Streets & Trips
kordon
I've read every thread I can find, and still can't get this working with Microsoft Streets and Trips. I have to plug it in and out over 50, 60, 80 times before it will finally load the driver. Until then I keep getting the USB device not recognized. I am using the Windows 7 driver off u-Blox website as the driver. The CD wouldn't load at all. I've run out of ideas.

The Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for the Navation 168 (ublox) are available on Windows update. However, when I install S&T 2010 on either a Win 7 32 or 64 bit machine, the drivers included work just fine. Why don't you check in Device Manager while the GPS is plugged in (don't change USB ports) and it will tell you which COM port to point S&T to. Also some people have problems with that GPS (and other dongle type units) if they don't use the included extension cable.

The issue is that it refuses to load the driver when its plugged in, therefore it doesn't show in device manager. I have to plug and unplug over and over to get it to finally load the driver, then it works fine. I've tried the driver on Windows Update also.

It doesn't sound like this has anything to do with Streets and Trips. It's an issue with the USB port/s on your machine and/or the u-Blox.

Have you tried it on another USB port or better yet another machine?

Any problems with other USB devices (memory sticks/thumb drives etc.)?

From your description of the symptoms I would lean toward an intermittent USB connector on the u-Blox if you aren't experiencing problems with other USB devices.

One other thing - I don't think it's a driver issue. When inserted a USB device has to power up from the bus, initialize and identify itself to Windows. Windows will then load the driver. There are exceptions (driver on device, etc.) but this is usually what happens.

No issues with other devices and I don't think its an issue with S&T. I think its with the u-blox also. What do you mean by intermittent USB connector on the u-blox?

He means that one of the connections inside the USB connector on the u-blox may be flakey.

You didn't say if this was a recent purchase or if the unit had been working before. It appears u-Blox is retiring some u-Blox 5 devices. If the purchase was recent did you get it from a dealer with an exchange program or warranty?

Brand new from Best Buy, Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010 with GPS. You know how they are, they don't take back opened software. After all I've done, and I know my way around a PC, I think it is a flakey u-Blox.

Why don't you try it on another computer to be sure then.

If you try it on another computer and have the same problem, Best Buy should exchange it. This is hardware, besides, they're supposed to even exchange software if the DVD is defective.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks for all the replies!
