Using Backroad Mapbooks GPS Maps with Garmin Mobile PC
Rob76
Hi,

I have been reading your forum for most of the day trying to find out how to use BC and Alberta Backroad GPS Maps with Garmin Mobile PC.

I have read a few threads, and some say I need to use MapSource and others say to use GPSGate.

Before I go down the road of using them could anyone give me some guidance on which one to use at what process I have to do to import the map?

I am currently downloading the map from the Backroads site, which is a massive 2.6GB, I am assuming I will need it as I have not been able to import from the SD card so far.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

You will need to use MapSource to transfer the maps to your Mobile PC product. Backroad MapBooks is considered a locked map product so you will need to provide the Software Unit ID of Mobile PC (software only) or the serial number of the GPS (10x or 20x) included with Mobile PC (hardware version) to them (Backroad MapBooks)and request an unlock code.

GPS Gate is a program to allow non Garmin GPS to work with Garmin products such as nRoute. It can also aquire GPS data from USB connected Garmin handheld devices. It is capable of providing GPS data to more than one COM port at the same time. None of these features are required to use Mobile PC.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the quick reply. So I need to use MapSource, where do I get this from, I looked on the Gramin site, and all I could see was updates for it.

And I assume I will use the serial number within Mapsource to unlock the map?

If you do not have MapSource on your computer, you can not install it directly. However, we have found that installing Garmin BaseCamp first will then allow you to install MapSource. You may uninstall BaseCamp afterwards or use its specialized features. Garmin: BaseCamp Updates & Downloads

The unlock code (25 digit code) you receive from BackRoad Mapbooks must be put in MapSource before you transfer the maps to Mobile PC. When you get that far, let us know and we'll explain how to unlock the maps.

I assume you will need one each for BC and Alberta as they are separate products. Those codes must be based on the product you are planning to use them with as stated before.

Rob,

1. Which version of Mobile PC do you have, Software-only or one that came with a Garmin GPS (e.g. GPS10x or GPS20x)?

It matters because the way you get the Unit ID that Backroads Mapbook needs for generating the unlock code is different for each version.

For the versions that come with a GPS receiver, you need the serial number from the receiver.

For the software-only version of Mobile PC, you need the Software Unit ID (found on the SETTINGS > ABOUT page in Mobile PC).

2. What device did you buy the Backroad Mapbooks SD card for? E.g. did you buy it for a Garmin GPS navigation device, like a Nuvi or eTrex or something like that? Or did you buy it for Mobile PC?

Hi Ken,

1. I bought it with the USB GPS 20x

2. I bought the Backroad GPS Maps for the Garmin Mobile PC Software.

Thanks.

Ok, so I have got the download version of the BC and Alberta Backroad Maps, which was 1 big 2.6gb file.

I have downloaded and installed BaseCamp. It does not come with MapSource, but does come with MapInstall which I assume is the same thing.

When I run MapInstall it gives me an error saying:

Quote:
MapInstall could not find any installed products.

Please install one or more MapSource products and start MapInstall again
So I assume I need to install the downloaded map, but that's what I am trying to do with map Install, so I am a bit confused.

What should I do next?

Ah Ha!! The dreaded "install" confusion.

You need to think about things differently, Rob. It's not *that* you are installing maps. It's *what* you are installing the maps *onto*.

The downloaded installer installs the maps to your PC so they can be used in Mapsource, Basecamp and MapInstall. This allows you to view the maps, make and edit waypoints and routes, view and edit tracks and other wonderful things that you might like to do with maps on your PC.

Mapsource and MapInstall are also capable of *installing* (there's that word again!!) the maps onto a Garmin navigation device like a Nuvi or eTrex or Colorado or ... etc.

Mobile PC is considered a "navigation device" as far as installing maps is concerned. So, the downloaded installer from Backroads Mapbooks will not install the maps into Mobile PC. You need to use Mapsource or MapInstall to install them into Mobile PC, just as you would another Garmin navigation device.

But first you need to *install* them onto the PC in order for Mapsource or MapInstall to find them.

Clear as mud, yes???

Once you understand all that, you still won't be able to do much without an unlock code for the downloaded maps. You can use the downloaded installer to install them on the PC so Basecamp/MapInstall and/or Mapsource can see them. But you won't be able to install them into Mobile PC until they are unlocked.

When you are ready for your next lesson, Grasshopper, please ask the next question. (Hint: It's "How do I get an unlock code?")

You're welcome...

MapSource is not included with BaseCamp. The purpose of installing BaseCamp was so you could install MapSource. Go get it and install it.

Or he could just keep using Basecamp and MapInstall. Basecamp is pretty slick for topo-style maps that contain DEM data (3D terrain info) like Backroad Mapbooks. Mapsource can only do the direct overhead roadmap-style view whereas Basecamp has a slick rotating 3D view like Google Earth if the maps contain the necessary data.

MapInstall is basically the map installing code from Mapsource. It works identically.

I see what you mean. I had never tried that product before.

They've spruced up the user interface on MapInstall to make it better as a standalone map installer. As your screenshot shows, it has some really useful helper displays on the sides. Overall, a really nice piece of work.

Thanks for the posts.

So I have installed the map onto the PC

I have run MapInstall and unlocked the map, which was done when I registered it online the first time to get the downloadable map.

Now when I try to run the Mapinstall it lets me select the device which is Mobile PC, then I select the map area, then it says building map for about 30 minutes while it tries to install, then at the very end it says "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device. Access is denied."

All was working well until that point. Any ideas?

I thought the total map was too big to send to Mobile PC. Try selecting a small portion of map segments and sending them as a test.

Tried just one grid, same error.
