Ken,
They have some free voices at Navitones and I will download one of them and see if they work. If they do, I'll buy the KITT voice from them. I can't find it for free anywhere, and for $10, it's worth it not to have to make it myself. Here's the reply I got from Navitones after I told them that Mobile PC does use custom voices...

Quote:
Our voices download by using the Garmin device communicator. This communicator has to find your device before it can automatically install the voice onto the Garmin. This most likely will not work on your PC because it won't be able to read your device. You can however try downloading one of our free voices we have available for Garmin. Garmin Communicator finds Mobile PC on my computer. Whenever I do anything that causes my browser to launch Garmin Communicator, like transferring a destination from, say, Mapquest to my Nuvi, Mobile PC always shows up in the list of Garmin devices to select from.

That doesn't mean it will put the voice file in the right place, of course. I think NavTones has a script on their end to cause Garmin Communicator to do the right thing. It's pretty clear from both of their answers that they haven't actually tried anything with Mobile PC, so they don't have a clue. That being the case, even if Garmin Communicator does see Mobile PC there's a good chance it won't be able to do the right thing with one of their custom voice files. You'll probably have to do it manually.

Here is the instruction for using the Guvernator custom voice file. You should be able to figure out a variation that will work for your needs based on the filename of the free custom voice file and the standard filenames you find in Mobile PC's ..\VOICE folder.

Quote:
Before you do anything with this file, browse your Garmin's voice folder, and make a backup of your English_American_.vpm file, by saving it to some other folder on your PC. Another thing you can do is just rename the original American_English_.vpm to 1American_English_.vpm or whatever.

Now rename English_American_Governator.vpm to English_American_.vpm, and upload it to your Garmin device.
Tested with Garmin Mobile XT; should work with Garmin Nuvi series.
Note that all the Garmin standard voice filenames have a trailing underscore "_". It is significant and must be there in the filename.

Ken,
Thanks. I have your instructions printed out. You are absolutely right about everything you said. The Navitones website can "see" my device, but doesn't seem to know what to do with it. I asked them to send me the .vpm file directly and I will load it manually per your instructions. If this works, I will go ahead and buy their KITT voice.
I'm working on the KITT icon now. My full size KITT is gonna ROCK!
Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

PS....I've found that both the Garmin website and the Navitone website don't recongnize Google Chrome as a browser. I've had to switch to Firefox.

Navitone won't sell me the raw VPM files. They say they are "locked" in the software they sell that won't recongnize Mobile PC. I tried Google-ing KITT.vpm, but the only site that comes up is a torrent where they want you to put in your charge card info or Paypal info, which I won't do.

If anyone has the KITT.vpm files, or knows where I can get them (and I'll pay for them), please let me know. Otherwise, I will have to go through the grueling task of making them myself with the sound bytes I have of William Daniels.

Thanks!

I'll post this in it's own thread, too.

Ken,
I finally got around to editing my KITT phrases to correspond to the phrases required by Garmin Voice Studio, and have entered them all. However, I don't see the VPM file so I can rename it and put it into my Mobile GPS.
Any ideas?

Too little information.

Did you save the file from Voice Studio? If so,

- What did you name it?

- Where did you tell it to save it to?

- Were there any errors?

- Did you try a Search for it?

Ken,
OK, well it saves the wave files in a separate folder, which is the name you give the file. There is no Save function, just a button that says "Send to GPS". There are also files that correspond to the same name as in the Mobile PC voice folder, like English_American, but the extention is vxml, instead of vpm. In the folder with the wave files, there are 2 additional files, a text file which lists all the wave files, and a vxml file which is the name of the file I gave the custom voice file.
I tried renaming that vxml file to English_American_.vpm, but it didn't work.
I wonder if there's a vxml to vpm converter...highly unlikely, huh?

What happened when you poked the Send To GPS button?

No GPS found...

PS...I have the Garmin Communicator, too....

PPS....I also tried this Non TTS Voice Editor
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/NonTTSVoiceEditor

but got nowhere. When I try to add a wave file, it says no 000.wav file or bin associated with wave file.
What the heck?

Ken,
I was told by the developer of the Voice Editor that I need to copy the English_American file, break it apart with his Voice Editor, copy all the 000 files and exchange the voices for my voices, then merge them all together into a VPM file and copy that into the Mobile PC voice folder, as per your instructions.
So, it's more work now for me, after doing all the same stuff for the Garmin Voice Studio, but hopefully this will work. I haven't heard from Garmin, but it seems to me they aren't really supporting Mobile PC like they are their portable GPS's.

I guess you haven't heard the bad news, Chris. Mobile PC is officially discontinued. Garmin no longer supports it. Not that they ever did support it very much anyway.

I hope you get the KITT voice file to work. Please do continue to keep us posted.

Well, that figures. That's just typical of my luck. Do you know I bought a Dreamcast system and 2 weeks later they discontinued it?
Oh, well. I hope they at least keep the map updates coming.
