Best Laptop GPS Software?

Contrary to what Garmin customer support will tell you, you can purchase Garmin's City Navigator maps and get unlock codes that will work with Mobile PC.

If you bought the version that came with a Garmin GPS receiver you can register the receiver and buy the lifetime updates for it, I think (Terry may be able to remember whether this works or not). In any case, you can buy new maps and use the serial number of the GPS receiver to get the unlock code for them. That definitely works.

If you bought the software-only version of Mobile PC, the Software Unit ID will get you an unlock code that will work.

Thanks to the kind assistance of the good folks at Backroad Mapbooks, Terry and I have been able to test all of these scenarios for unlocking maps to the various versions of Mobile PC.

The hardware version of Mobile PC can be registered based on the serial number of the GPS. The software version cannot be registered.

I don't think that applies to Garmin maps due to the fact they keep track of all serial numbers. Third party suppliers such as Backroad MapBooks don't.

Terry, there are some pieces missing from your response that perhaps you are assuming I already understand or remember.

My main question was whether you can get the lifetime updates for the GPS10x or GPS20x that come with the hardware versions of Mobile PC? Do you recall?

Re your second statement, you don't think what applies to Garmin maps?

- You don't think you can get unlock codes for any version of Mobile PC for Garmin maps?

- Or, you don't think you can get unlock codes for Garmin maps for the software-only version of Mobile PC using the Software Unit ID?

Ken,
I bought the version of Mobile PC with the USB GPS.

As far as I know you can get update maps, singly or lifetime for any GPS device you can register at mygarmin for which maps are available. That includes the hardware version of Mobile PC.

The software version 'Software Unit ID' can only be used with third party produced Garmin-type maps.

I was able to get the most recent map update for free when I registered. I didn't see how much a lifetime subscription is.

I think it is running about US$90 these days.

Is that an opinion (yours? Garmin's?) or an actual test result?

Opinion based on the results from a previous poster from Europe (can't remember his name). If you can figure out how to submit a SU ID to Garmin and get a key back, let me know.

Sorry the poster was popej

Looks like that Non TTS Voice Editor is going to work. I haven't completely finished, yet, but I ran a test and so far, so good! It takes a LOT of editing of phrases I already have to match the required phrases. Very tedious work...

It's actually very easy. You pick up the phone, call Garmin and ask to purchase an unlock code for the Unit ID. Don't say "Software Unit ID" and don't mention "Mobile PC" or you'll confuse the poor dears. Just ask for an unlock code for the Unit ID and the map product.

The issue with using the Unlock Wizard or MyGarmin has nothing to do with the fact it's a Software Unit ID. It has to do with the fact that there's nothing registered so you can't get past that part of the automated process.

Don't confuse this with an issue of whether you can get unlock codes for non-registered products. You can. It's just that the automated processes in the Unlock Wizard and MyGarmin don't work that way. The human customer service reps just punch in the Product ID of the map product and the Unit ID or Serial Number of the "device" and give you an unlock code.

The reason I know this is that that's the way I had to do it the last two times for unlock codes for my iQue 3600 after it was declared an unsupported product (the Unlock Wizard and MyGarmin also won't work if they find the device and see it's an unsupported product).

That's also the way it worked for the testing with Backroad Mapbooks. Their tech just took the product ID and the Software Unit ID, punched them into the unlock code generator and sent me the unlock code. They use the exact same unlock code generator that Garmin does. They license it from Garmin.

I would love to make you a bet but I have no desire to waste $75 to unlock maps for Mobile PC when it's unlikely I'll use it in future. Of course we could make a bet that if it works you pick up the tab. You game for that?

By the way, I'm sure it was popej who put us onto the notion of using the Software Unit ID to get an unlock code.

In a round about way, you are right about popej putting us on to the Software Unit ID. He said that was the way third party producers did it because they didn't have a serial number database as Garmin does.

I also do not expect to buy a map for Mobile PC, but if I see one of interest, I will certainly try your suggestion. mygarmin may not work for unsupported products but they still maintain the serial number of your registered products.

I do not want to be off topic but I need to know if garmin can track your garmin gps?
tcassidy
Why would they want to?

Long story. I rented a car and a Garmin GPS last October in Knoxville, Tenn. When I returned the car at 0600 hours, the rental place was closed. So I locked the GPS in the trunk of the car and put the keys in the drop box.

Well guess what. They are trying to charge me over $500.00 dollars for the GPS. The letter said that they rented me the GPS and I was not to take it. Go figure. Anyway I was hoping they could atleast track their GPS units.
