I know that Vista isn't supported, but I wonder if it will actually run on it...

I can upgrade with my CoPilot 9 registration.

what to do - what to do...

Hmm, but what will you do if the program simply refuses to install or run on Vista?

There must be a valid reason why ALK clearly states:

Its a conspiracy. They are trying to force malaki86 to get a new laptop!!

Ha ha, yes, I agree that it is a conspiracy. However, the real reason is that they do not want Malaki86 to have a chance to test drive the software.

The laptop is perfectly fine, but it has Vista on it. Sure, I wanna replace Vista, but to go spend, what, $150, for the W7 upgrade...

I might go ahead and buy it (CoPilot) and see if it'll install/run.

I think the cost of ALK and the cost of upgrading the laptop is a wash. However, in one case you would have to do both. And although you could upgrade windows for around $100, there may be other costs.

Maybe it would be cheaper to ask ALK if they will let you test it on a Vista platform. all they could do is say no - no cost there.

If I do the Windows 7 upgrade, I'll get the Home Premium OEM for $99 (TigerDirect) and a new 320gig hard drive. That way I still have my original OS in case anything goes bonkers. Plus, it makes it easy to transfer everything - just plug both drives in (my laptop can use 2 drives).
tcassidy
OEM costs that much? I thought the upgrade was about that price. Then you could just clone your drive and upgrade the original (or clone, depending on your comfort level) and have no need to copy anything.

OEM is $99. Upgrade is $159 (somewhere around that). Retail is $199.

Funny, I show it at US $120 at Staples. I'm sure someone sells it cheaper than them. Screw Amazon!

I honestly don't remember what the upgrade price was now. I tend to not use the upgrade versions, though, because of the PITA of not having an original Vista disc and such (preinstalled Vista).

Speaking of Upgrades, I was just told that I can buy the upgrade version 8 from my version 10. Just hope it works.

Malaki86,

If you don't have drive cloning software you can download XXClone. There is a freeware version that works well.

If you are getting a new drive anyway and don't have a need to do a clean Win7 install, as Terry said, cloning the Vista system to the new drive and upgrading is painless and will save you a bunch of work reinstalling everything.

If the OEM version is the cheapest way to go, you can still do a Vista to Win 7 upgrade with it if you want to save yourself a bunch of work.

i *may* try the upgrade route. The question is, though, should I? After all - Vista's been chugging along on the drive for - hmmm - probably over a year now since my last reinstall.
