How to set pushpin background color in Microsoft Streets & Trips?

RE: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010

I created a custom pushpin with OpenOffice Draw. OO Draw does not have a "save as" function for .bmp file type extensions. So, I copied and pasted the image into MS Paint. There, I resaved it as a .bmp file.

When I import the image as a custom pushpin, the very back layer of the image is lost. It is simply a black square that gives definition to the white images. I grouped the image, when I built it. Without the black background, the image gets lost on the map.

Anybody have any ideas?

If I understand what you are saying, it sounds like S&T makes the border colour transparent. Did you try putting a thin frame around it in a different colour than black.

MS Streets and Trips (just like MS MapPoint) actually makes the color of the top left pixel transparent.

To be more specific, it makes the color of the 0,0 pixel transparent throughout the image. Therefore, you want to change the color of that pixel to something you won't mind being transparent. See attachments.

Okay, you guys are just way cooollll!!! I changed 0/0 to red and, now, the black background shows as intended... Woohoo!!! Thanks!

I am now trying to get control of the size of the icon when it displays on the map... I did my best to construct it to be 1/4"x1/4" in OO Draw... I also scaled the image size to 1/4"x1/4" in Paint before resaving as .bmp... But, the icon displays some 4 to 8 times larger than the preloaded icons... How do I get the sizing just right?

Take a look at the color sample.bmp file in the Samples folder. It gives an idea of what waypoint symbols need to look like.

I don't know. 16x16 seems awfully small for an icon. I guess you have to try it in the program!

With respect to thumbnail size, it is the number of pixels in the BMP file that matter. Your ski thumbnail is 64x60 pixels which is quite large for pushpin purposes. I have halved that down to 32x30 (see attached) and you get a more workable pushpin icon. Sure, you lose a little detail but...

Thanks, all, for your good help, instructions and thumbnails... I settled on 20x20 pixels... This is just slightly larger than a regular icon... It gives it a little more presence on the map... Which I like...

Happy New Year!
