Garmin Mobile PC Discontinued?
mrbombastic
I have read on the web, that Garmin Mobile PC is discontinued. What a loss.

Six months ago, xPosTech noticed the software/hardware bundles being marked as "discontinued" by some retailers: http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/3799-garmin-mobile-pc-10x-discontinued

Now even the software itself is marked as discontinued. If I recall correctly, a while back I heard that the product was developed by Garmin on the request of some OEM. I don't recall now who the OEM was, but I remember it was some manufacturer who eventually sold UMPCs with Garmin Mobile PC.

I guess the demand for the product has declined, so Garmin made the decision to discontinue it.

I personally have now both, the software-only version, and also the GPS 10x version. If the price is right, I may even get tempted to buy more.

Interesting ...

Microsoft might very well end up the "last man standing" in the laptop GPS arena, with Streets & Trips. Of course, we still have iGuidance and a couple more products worth of buffer ...

Last time I checked Microsoft doesn't even support netbook resolutions. IIRC it also ran like crap on my netbook. Garmin was the only one making a PC based GPS that ran smoothly and didn't have microscopic buttons.

CoPilot v8 runs perfectly fine on my 800x600 display, and that's with it actually reduced to around 740x480.

iGuidance 2011 also runs fine on a 1024x600 (netbook) screen and wastes even less space than Mobile PC.

I haven't tried CoPilot but iGuidance is good on my 800x600 netbook. As Terry said, it wastes less vertical space than Mobile PC. It has a different interface but still easy to use and the icons are a good size.

Are you sure you netbook is 800x600 Ken? That is not a regular landscape format and nobody makes portrait laptops any more. Maybe 800x480 I suppose.

You're absolutely right, Terry. I was going from memory. Never a good thing to do at my age. I just checked and it's 1024x600.

Take a look at ALK's CoPilot v8 Truck Laptop. It's great. I use it in the truck on a daily basis.

I guess I'm lucky I still have mine on the CD. But my problem is my receiver cable at the USB end it has been bent so much that it has broken a wire inside and now I need to get a new one but not sure if I have to get the same one or will another receiver work. Can anyone answer this question for me.

If you have the hardware version which included a GPS receiver (20x), the program will not work with another GPS unit. You should contact Garmin about a replacement. I think, in the past, they could rectify that for you for a small fee. As to whether they still will I couldn't say.
