Cannot open 2010 files in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2011
KAP
I downloaded the trial version of Streets & Trips 2011 without a problem. When I attempt to open a file created with S&T 2010, I get the usual pop up that the file was created with an older version of the map and to click okay to update it. I then get another pop up that states "This application cannot open this file." This happens with every old file I attempt to open.

Does anybody have any idea as to what is causing this and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Streets and Trips 2011 will convert older .est files into the new version; I successfully updated a number of them.

Perhaps your issue is related to my observation posted in another thread:

Quote:
I had an interesting thing happen with Streets and Trips 2011 on Windows 7 32 bit, though perhaps not related to your problem.

S&T worked fine, but earlier today I ran the Microsoft Live OneCare Scanner. All my .est file associations disappeared and I couldn't re-associate them with Streets and Trips. S&T didn't even show up in the list of available programs even though it was still on my computer and opened when I used the shortcut. I didn't find any other file association problems. I re-installed S&T, re-associated the files, and now all works normally.

I've never had this happen before with many annual versions of S&T and regular use of the MS scanner, but it may not be related to either this 2011 version or the scanner. I've posted this just in case anyone else sees similar problems.

Is it possible that the est files are no longer associated with S&T of any age? If so, right click one of your est files and choose 'Open with'. This should give you a list including 'Choose Program'. Selecting that and finding S&T 2011 in the list should reassociate your est files with S&T 2011. Make sure the 'Always use the selected program....' checkbox is ticked.

Thanks, Terry. I tried your suggestion and it still didn't work.

Has anybody tried to open a file created in S&T 2010 in S&T 2011 with success? If others have gotten it to work, maybe my download was corrupted, although I have deleted the program and downloaded it a second time.

Have you tried opening the files using File - Open from the menu bar in S&T 2011?

Just tried it again, Terry. I still get the two pop ups that I described at the beginning of this post. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you still have a copy of S&T 2010 that you could test them with?

Terry
KAP
Yes and it opens all my S&T files without a problem. I upgrade every year and I've never had this problem before. Do you think it may be because I'm using the trial version?

I created and saved a file in version 2010, and then I was able to successfully open the file in the trial version of Streets and Trips 2011. I'm not sure what the problem may be on your end.

Was the problem file originally created in a much older version, and later converted to v.2010? I'm not sure if that could cause the issue, I'm just exploring a possibility.

Maybe you could attach one of the est files you are having trouble with for us to test with.

KAP
Okay....here's where I show my ignorance. How do I attach a file?

Again, thanks for all your efforts to help me.

Use the "GO Advanced" button at the bottom and choose "Manage Attachements" to upload the files.
KAP
Okay, I did that but I don't see the file anyplace. Does it have to have one of the file extensions listed?

Yes, est files are fine. don't forget to click the upload button after you have the selected file showing.

Just in case it is a file made with an older version than S&T 2010 and that makes a difference, open it in S&T 2010 and select File - Save. That will convert it to S&T 2010 format. Then try opening it in S&T 2011.

To test my hypothesis, I attempted to open an est file it appears I created with S&T 2005. Sure enough, I got the same messages you did.

I opened the same file in S&T 2010 with only a warning that it would have to match the address records. Once that completed, I saved it as an S&T 2010 file with a different name (I appended -2010).

I then attempted to open the modified file with S&T 2011. Again I got the warning about matching records but it opened with no issues.

I do note that S&T 2011 can take more than 10 seconds to open on my Vista laptop with no splash screen or any indication that it is starting. S&T 2010 starts in under 5 seconds on the same computer.
