CoPilot in Canada? How are the maps?
Ken in Regina
Has anyone done much with CoPilot in Canada? How are the maps? Are they Navteq maps or something else?

I'm thinking of getting the BadELF GPS receiver for my wife's iPod Touch to try this with, just for fun. CoPilot Live North America is available for the Touch but there's no point in doing this if the Canadian maps suck.

I've been to CA 3 or 4 times since I got CoPilot. I've had zero issues with the routing there, other than it not showing the rest areas along the highways like they do in the US. Keep in mind, though, that I've only been on the major routes there and not out traveling the wilderness.

Thanks Malaki. I'm not worried about the wilderness. Not unless you consider cities of 200,000, like Regina, the wilderness.

I'm actually more interested in using it to find addresses and POIs in cities. I've got the netbook and three handheld GPS devices, that will work fine for highway and "wilderness" navigation.

Is there any way to add other maps, like topos or hiking maps to CoPilot ... just in case I want to get lost in the wilderness?

I did forget to mention that, yes, the map data is from NavTeq.

You can add other maps, but I think just for other regions, such as the UK, not topo/off-road maps, at least none that I've seen.

If you want me to check for a few addresses or built-in POI's, just let me know. You can send them via PM if you want, or in here. I'll let ya know what the software gives.

Thanks Malaki,

If the maps are Navteq I know exactly what to expect because that's what Garmin uses. The next potential roadblock is to persuade my wife to put something on her new toy. That might be a problem.

Spotted the first negative already. Address search requires City or Zip Code first just like all the European products. Yecch! I hope there is an option to change this.

Nope - no way around the address search. It asks for the city, then the street, then the address.

I sent ALK support a whiney email!!

Re: Navteq. From what I understand, it is a combination of ALK's data and Navteq's data. I don't know for sure, but my guess would be that ALK uses (at least for the North American version of CoPilot Live 8), its own data for roads and addresses, and in addition to that it likely uses Navteq for truck-specific data.

I don't have the software myself, but I think it would be easy to tell by comparing the errors and commissions in CoPilot to some other Novteq-only product.

I was trying to date it against CNNANT by looking at some small changes in my area. Unfortunately, it does not seem to match the Navteq data for any product I have in certain respects.

Marvin, I'll go with your assessment of mixed map data based on the small area I have checked. The best match for this error to products I still have installed is Delorme Topo 8. I doesn't look like any Navteq products I can check back to CNNANT v8.

CoPilot 8 standard (not truck) version on my Android phone also use NavTeq map data.
