Folks ,
Would love to able to review Garmin Mobile PC but ahve been unable to source this product. Suppliers , GPS Warehouse , U.K. tell me that Garmin are unable to supply till mid to late October. Any idea if the product is actually available or is it vaporware.

It's available. It can be purchased from Garmin, from GPSCentral, from GPSCity and lots of other suppliers. There are two versions. There is a version that comes with a Garmin GPS20 receiver for those who do not already have a receiver. And there is a software-only version for those who have a receiver and only want the maps and nav software.

The reviews and discussion you can read in this forum are mainly from real experiences with the released consumer product.

Unfortunately for those outside North America it is currently a North America-only product.

...unless you buy Garmin Mobile PC that includes North American map data, and add to it UK map data yourself. But it may or may not be easy (or possible), so before you spend any money, please do read what has been written on this forum about adding maps to Garmin Mobile PC. Ken and Terry and others have written quite a bit of great information on the topic.

...and welcome to Laptop GPS World, RobC!

I use Garmin Mobile PC with North American map data and I added the map data of Europe: “City Navigator Europe NT V9” by using MapSource.

Garmin Mobile PC works very well with both maps.

Bonjour Alain,

That's great news. Do you have the GPS20 version in order to obtain an unlock code?

Cela est de grandes nouvelles. Avez-vous le GPS20 version pour obtenir un ouvre le code?

Thanks, Alain. It sounds like it will be an interesting trip. Will your laptop operate on European power?

Merci, Alain. Il semble comme ce sera un voyage intéressant. Votre portable fonctionnera-t-il sur l'électricité européen?

Off course... If you check on the back of almost all laptop charger you will read: Input 100-240V - 50-60 Hz.

All you need is a wall adapter that you may find in any hardware or electronic shop.

If not you use a small appliance transformer...

I go in Europe usually once a year ( my son and my brother in law work there) and I never had problem with electricity.

Alain, this is indeed very good news. Finally we know for sure. Thanks for letting us know.

It seems your trip will also bring you to Eastern Europe. Hopefully you will have street-level map coverage everywhere you go. Enjoy you trip.

Hello Marvin, I haven't chimed in for a few months. I was curious how that tablet has been working for you.

Specifically with Garmin Mobile PC, I'm considering purchasing a tablet right now with my volume of useage.(Garmin Mobile PC)

Thanks in advance!!

Greg, I have no regrets. Terry (tcassidy), and also at least one other person here at the forum, have the same HP tx2000. If there was one thing I wish I could improve on the tablet PC, it would be the brightness of the screen. But for $1,000 I can't complain. I would have to pay $3,000 for a 12" convertible laptop/tablet with a sunlight-readable screen. I don't think I would be willing (or able) to pay three times as much just to get (much) better screen.

I'm happy with it. I use it daily at least 12 hours a day, on the road and at home. Garmin Mobile PC looks gorgeous on it.

I do a lot of repeated trips. Is there a way to use Garmin Mobile PC, to keep track of the distances of various routes and the amount of time they take. For example, it'd be cool to know the average time it takes to get between two points at various times of the day. Or it'd be good to know if the average time between two points was different using different routes. Also, is there add-on software for Mobile PC that might include additional functionality?

You could install MapSource on your computer and transfer the tracks from Mobile PC to MapSource. It can give overall distance, elapsed time and average speed based on those tracks. MapSource is free from Garmin. Unfortunately, the latest version 6.14.1 does not seem to work with Mobile PC. You need 6.13.7 available here:

First it was OQO2 ultra-mobile PC that sold along with Garmin Mobile PC, and now it is Fujitsu that sells it's tiny new laptop with integrated GPS and pre-installed Garmin Mobile PC: Fujitsu U820 GPS Laptop
