Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 doesn't open version 2010 files?
flannigan
I just installed Microsoft Streets and Trips 2011. It works fine. I left 2010 installed. When I try to open a 2010 file the window opens with:
Quote:
This file was created with an older version of the map. Before you can open this file, your records must be matched to the updated map. Click OK to match the records and open the file.
When I click on OK a window opens up that says:
Quote:
This application cannot open this file. Consult Help for information about compatible formats.
Then the window closes.

I cannot make 2011 open the older version. I have a workaround by opening 2011 and copying the pushpins from the 2010 v to the 2011. However this will be VERY time consuming if I have to do it with all of my 2010 maps.

Does anyone know why this happens and what the cure could be?

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

Although 2011 maps will not open in 2010. Opening 2010 files in 2011 should be fine. Is this happening for all your 2010 files? Create a ST2010 test file and open it in 2011 to verify.

Mike, is it possible the est file you are trying to open was created in an older (pre 2008) version? If that is the case, the easiest solution is to open it with S&T 2010 and resave it in that format, possibly with a new name. Then try opening that file in S&T 2011.

Larry:

I have 32 2010 map files. I tried 7 of them and the same thing happens.

This is the first time this has ever happened in the all the years I have bought every new version.

I just opened a new file with 2010, saved it to my desktop and named it test. I opened it an it went through the process of getting me to open it with 2011 and the same thing happened. I right clicked it and clicked on open with 2011 and it did the same thing. If I right click it and click on open with 2010 it opens ??????

Thanks,

Mike, could you please attach to your next post here a sample of a file saved in your 2010 version?

Also, just for the fun of it, try to start your v2011 "As Administrator", to see if that helps.

Marvin:

Here is a copy of the test file I just made that will not open in 2011.

I'm also attaching the file I tried right after installing 2011, it's labeled St. Louis.

Thanks,

Mike

I just tried each of those files with 2011 on a Vista laptop and Win7 desktop. Both opened fine with only the records match warning. Maybe Marvin's suggestion of 'Run as Administrator' is needed.

Run as Administrator box WAS checked. I unchecked and checked again, same thing happened ??

Try opening S&T 2011 and then open one of your files from the File - Open command.

Marvin:

The last photo I attached shows the dialog box that opened when I clicked on the OK to open with the new 2011. When I clicked on it (attached) the 2011 window closed and I was not permitted to do anything else.

Would you think I should uninstall Streets & Trips 2011 and reinstall to maybe fix this problem ?

Thanks,

Mike

Terry:

I opened 2011 and then opened of of the 2010 files from from the "Open File" location. Did the same thing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have an assortment of older est files all the way back to S&T 2004. The only time I get that error message is when I try to open an older one.

However the message is not paired with the message you get. If I see your first message, the file will open.

If you are getting different results, maybe it is worth uninstalling S&T 2011 and reinstalling it again.

It just ocurred to me that I used to open many of the files (from my Streets folder) in the new version right after I installed it and saved it in the new version. Therefore the ORIGINAL file COULD have been from many years ago. I'm still puzzled because I saved it in the NEW version and should be only one year old ??? I probably go back to the 1st or 2d year that Streets came out. I don't remember what year that was, maybe back in the 80's. ??????

All the files I have probably back to S&T 2002 will open with S&T 2010. However S&T 2011 only opens files from S&T 2008 and up (maybe 2007 - I couldn't test that as I don't have an installed version).

When I took an older file (eg 2004) that wouldn't open, I could open it in S&T 2010 and resave it in that format. Then it would open in S&T 2011 with only the warning about matching records.

I just tested an older file probably created in S&T 2004 to confirm this. I opened it in S&T 2010 and used 'Save As' to save it with a different file name. This also converts it to 2010 format. I then opened that file successfully with S&T 2011. As far as I am concerned, if you can open the est in 2010, you should be able to convert it to a format compatible with S&T 2011 by resaving it!
