DeLorme Street Atlas with GPS locks up my netbook after few minutes of use
I have a GlobalSat BU-353 GPS receiver and DeLorme Street Atlas 2011. The computer locks up when I use the GPS with Street Atlas after approx. a few minutes or more. This can be as little as two minutes up to twenty minutes.

I have a new Acer Aspire One D255E-1802 Netbook with an Intel Atom N550 1.5g dual core processor, 1GB DDR3 memory, 250 GB HDD, Windows XP Professional SP3. I got rid of most auto start programs, updated GPS driver, tried different USB ports, tried fresh install of WinXP, tried with my older Street Atlas 2009, and still the computer either locks up (where I have to hit power button to shut down and re start), or it will give me the Blue Screen and reboot.

By itself, the GPS receiver works fine with it’s own utility, and Street Atlas 2011 works fine by itself. But together it freezes.

Is there anyone that’s had similar problems that’s found a solution? Is there anyone that has the same setup with positive results? Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be done to correct this? I like Street Atlas 2011 so I would like to stay with this software. I’ve tried several things to try to narrow down the problem with negative results. Hopefully someone has a solid solution.

Thank you for any help or info you can provide.

A friend just spoke to me about a very similar issue with a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 with Topo 9. Am very interested on any comments on this thread.

It might be that using the program in Navigation mode (while driving) that the computer is working so hard that it's overheating. I was having that issue with my full-power laptop. I had to make a solid "plate" to mount it on, with a small block of wood in the rear to allow the laptop to be sitting with enough airspace under it to keep it from overheating.

Prior to doing that (once I figured out it was overheating), I went into the power management and turned the max cpu to 50% (instead of 100%).

The next time it locks up on you, just feel around on the machine and see if it feels hot. If it does, that's probably your problem.
We tried GPSGate between the GPS and Topo 9 and that seems to have eliminated the problem. Worth a try - 14 day free trial.

After reading a post from Crusader dated July 4, 2010, I tried GPSgate, and it seems to have solved all my problems. I have to agree with what he said as it makes perfect sense. For anyone interested in reading the post, it was under > Delorme Street Atlas > Delorme Topo USA 8.0 + BU-353 + Acer Aspire One + Compatible? Thanks again Crusader. So far so good!
