Can I scan maps to use as a moving map in Garmin nRoute?
hummerin
I did a search but no luck. Can I use a scanner to scan a map, then load in Mapsource, designate coordinates, then use in nRoute?

In other words, can I scan maps to use as a moving map in nRoute by using MapSource?

Only with great difficulty. First, nRoute does not use raster images, which is what will come off your scanner, so you would have to figure out how to convert any scans from raster images to vector graphics. Then you have to calibrate the vector maps. Then you have to convert to Garmin format.

Don't even ask because I have no clue.

There are other nav programs that can use raster images (scans or screen captures) directly for moving map display and make it really easy to calibrate them. Check OKMap for one possible solution.

It's possible you might also be able to use Google Earth if it already has the imagery you want.

Yes, I spent a couple of hours late last night 'playing around'.
I was trying to get around paying the $25 for the Canada topo's.

I'm sending him the $25. Thanks for the response, Ken.

I assume you are talking about Ibycus Topo 4. They are great maps but not routable.

Yes, Ibycus Topo 4. I knew not routable, but they do move as a moving map, correct?

Yes, the Ibycus topos are genuine Garmin format maps so they will work in any Garmin software (Mobile PC, Mapsource, Basecamp, nRoute) or personal navigation device. As Terry said, they are not routable or searchable but they are really good maps. They are pretty much directly equivalent to the latest printed topos you can buy from the government.

Thanks Ken!

I am on a lot of forums and you guys are the best.
Whenever I have a question I get a direct immediate response.
The laptop in the Hummer with nRoute is a lot of fun and makes long road trips a lot more fun. I am in Chicago and have a place in Alaska. I will be driving up this summer.
I get the sense there are a lot of Canadians on here, so maybe I'll see you as I drive by.

Happy to help. If you're interested I could suggest a couple of scenic detours that will make the trip more interesting and won't add a lot of driving time.
