Unlocked maps become locked in nRoute when GPS plugged in
oztaffy
Can anyone help me with the above. I am trying to use Garmin nRoute in conjunction with Mapsource (Australia) on my laptop. When I open the 2 programmes I get asked to "Unlock the maps" which I do by entering the unlock code that came with my Mapsource product. However as soon as I plug in the sensor it locks the maps and I can not unlock them. As you are probably aware Garming does not offer support anymore for nRoute and as a result I am left feeling frustrated.

Alternatively, if there is no way around this problem, is ther another product that I can use which will offer me the same functionality. My purpose for using nRoute is to allow me to input thousands of "Favourites" into the programme, but it is important that I have all the maps available.

Mapsource accepts any valid unlock code. nRoute needs code for attached device. If you have unlocked maps for other device than you use with nRoute, it won't work.

You can try to use free map in nRoute, for example OSM.

Hi oztaffy,

The good news is that we can probably work around the problem. But first more specifics are needed.

Are you using a Garmin GPS? If so, what model is it and is it the same GPS that the unlock code was created for?

Hi Ken,
Yes I am using a Garmin GPS, however I bought the unit in the UK and am not absoleutly sure what model it was, though it was a Nuvi. I subsequently bought Australian maps when I returned home, in the form of a CD, (City Navigator NT 2009) The Nuvi has since been recalled and now I have a Nuvi 2350, (I only really use the Nuvi for transferring "Favourites"). I'm just off on a trip and will be away for a few days, so may not reply promptly.

I'm still not clear on the specifics. Which Nuvi are the Oz maps unlocked for: the original Nuvi that was recalled or the 2350?

It was for the Nuvi that was recalled, I have since located the details, it was a "NUVI 250W". Also the GPS unit, (sensor) that I am using is a "Garmin GPS 18 x USB"

Download and install GPS Gate. With the 18x connected to your computer, let the GPS Gate wizard find it. Make a note of the VirtualCOM port GPS Gate lists as Garmin Emulator(generic device) and set nRoute to monitor that COM port.

Thanks Terry. That has done the trick. You have just alleviated a problem that I have been carrying around for the last year. Your help is very much appreciated.

Just to finish this, your problem arose because unlock codes are created using the unit ID of a specific unit, in this case your original 250W.

As soon as nRoute sees a Garmin GPS connected -- your GPS 18x in this case -- it queries it for the unit ID. When it compares it to the unlock code for the 250W, it fails.

Using GPSGate puts an effective block on nRoute's ability to query the 18x so it simply ignores the unlock code check and carries on with the navigation.

When Garmin recalled your Nuvi they should have supplied you with a new unlock code so your Oz maps would still work on the replacement unit. But that wouldn't have made any difference in this case because you aren't using the replacement unit with nRoute anyway.

Just so you'll know what's happening.
