Turn-by-turn Sat Nav software for netbook
Gerryr
Hi,

I have just bought a Nokia Netbook with an internal GPS receiver. Can anyone recommend turn by turn sat nav software please.

Thanks,
Gerry

I understand it runs Windows 7 so any software discussed here should work. Try the trial edition of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 for starters assuming you are in North America.

... or Microsoft AutoRoute (info here), if you are in Europe, Gerry. Alternatively, give Mapfactor Navigator a try, there's a free version, too (info here). And welcome to the forum.

Sorry, I am in the UK.

The problem with MS Autoroute is that it is processor and RAM hungry. Being a netbook my machine has a processor speed of 1.66 Mhz and 1G RAM. I assume the same problem would apply to Streets and Trips.

Thanks for your swift responses.

I understand that others have had success running S&T on netbooks. You could certainly try the AutoRoute trial to see if it meets your needs.

I am sure your observations about Autoroute and/or Streets and Trips will come as a big surprise to thousands of their users. After all, neither are exactly PhotoShop.

I ran Streets and Trips on a Samsung Windows 7 netbook around two years ago. No problems that I recall (except I just didn't like the program). Also tried it more recently on my HP Slate 500 which is a touchscreen Windows 7 device with a netbook class processor. Ran fine there too. So I think it will work, if you want to go that way.

Most netbooks allow for memory expansion up to 2GB, which might be a worthwhile thing to consider also, especially if you want to run more than one program at a time.

Don't overlook Garmin Mobile PC (info here). The product may no longer be supported by Garmin, but you may still find it in various online retailers, and it is an easy to use and a decent piece of software.

I agree, and it will also run just fine on a netbook.

I have both Streets & Trips and Garmin Mobile PC running happily in Windows 7 on an old Acer netbook .. One of the original 8.9" models.

I have downloaded MS S&T, but it can't find my GPS. I will have to contact Nokia as it is an integrated GPS unit.

Gerry, while awaiting Nokia's reply, you could experiment with GpsGate (info here). It may just do the trick if the issue is baud rate.
