How many versions back will S&T 2013 accept EST files?
In other words, will it open files created in S&T 2007, for example?
I just downloaded the oldest ST version available at MSDN, which is currently Streets & Trips 2009, I saved a file, opened the 2013 version, and successfully opened the 2009 file in the new 2013 version.
I may even have some installation CDs of older versions at home somewhere. I'll try to find them. It would be interesting to see if files saved in versions 2008 or even 2007 can still be opened in the new ST2013.
Thank you, Marvin, for breaking out this new thread and for testing it back a few versions.

Yes, it would be.
BTW, wouldn't it be a good idea for MSFT to put it writing, like in Help or About, some information about the specifics of backwards compatibility? It is a perenial issue.
Streets & Trips 2013 does open files saved in a version as old as 2008. I've just tested it after locating ST2008 installation disc. I have not yet located my old version 2007 discs though.
2013 opens v2008-v2013. Versions < v2008 are no longer supported.
Thanks for posting, Steve. No much point then in looking for old 2007 installation discs, since pre-2008 version files will not open.

Bumping it up to 2008 would have dropped support for users still on v2007, so I added v2010 as a download option and redesigned the page in hopes of making it less confusing for S&T users.
Thanks, Guys, for nailing down this issue of backwards compatability.
I just downloaded the trial S&T2013.
First off, I had to disable Zone Alarm firewall in order to get the program to open. I am using Vista OS. (I also planned to load it onto my Netbook with XP OS.)
Then when attempting to open May2012 POI Megafile, I get the message that 'the file was created with an older version of the map, click ok to match the records' etc. Then is says 'application cannot open the file, consult Help for matching records'. The file type is .est.
The same results when attempting to open 2 other files that were saved using S&T 2011.
I'm a little bit frustrated, as I have ordered the CD and may have to return it if I can't get this all working.
If you have S&T 2013 then I recommend downloading the current POI Megafile for 2013 (Jun) < expired link removed >
If you have 2011 files that will not open in 2013 I'd be very interested as this should not be the case.
Thanks. I had not checked for the Megafile for 2013, thinking if it was supposed to be backwards compatible it would be ok.
I have a couple files created with 2011 that won't open. Maybe because the POIs are not the 2013 Megafile. If it's supposed to be backward compatible, seems like it should all work and I should not need to download a new 2013 file....
Caroline, the files which ST2013 is unable to open, were they originally created many years ago, and then re-saved each year in a new S&T version? Or are the files fairly recent, and originally created in ST2011?
If they were first created in much older version (even if re-saved in ST2011), it may be possible ST2013 may be unable to open it (I think we have had a case like that here a few years ago). But if the file(s) were indeed first created in version 2011, the new ST2013 should have no problem opening them.
The files were created with ST2011. I save the newest POI in a separate file and periodically restart my 'working' file from the saved POI file. I found if I didn't do it that way, it moved slower and slower, like it became 'bogged down' . I hope this makes sense the way I'm explaining it.
I hate to have to rebuild my POI using the 2013 download. I have deleted and replaced some files using the updated ones in discoveryowners.com, plus created a few of my own. (Another feature I was hoping to see in the 2013, is the capability to sort the POIs. Looks like it's not there.)
Caroart - if you would like to send me one of the problematic ST2011 map files that will not open in ST2013 I could investigate for you.
