2011 Streets & Trips w/GPS locator fails to load on Windows 8
TEXASTRAVELER
My old laptop crashed and I purchased a new one with Windows 8 on it. Tried to load my Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator (2010) and keep getting the following message:

Quote:
must load Microsoft visual C++ 2010 redistributable.
When I try to load this missing item, it then says failed to load and will not let me use this program. I use this program often and need it. Any ideas on how to get it to load. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

I just tried installing S&T 2010 on a fresh copy of Win 8 Pro on an HP tx2000. It had to download Net 3.5 but had no issues with Visual C++ or the program.

I wonder if your problem is to do with SmartScreen. I didn't enable this feature on my install of Win 8 as I had seen problems in a previous try similar to (but not the same as) yours. Try turning it off. I'd tell you how but this site does it better!

I noticed this post was actually about S&T 2011 so tried that too. No issues installing it.

So .NET 3.5 is now absent from Win8? I tried one of the betas (sorry "Release Candidates") and it had 3.5 installed but not switched on. You had to go into Control Panel to enable it.

Causes a problem for one of my products which still uses 2.0 (MapPoint itself ran fine - I think I was using 2013 for my tests).

I tried S&T 2013. Installing went ok but it failed to start until I did a computer restart. I assume Net 3.5 was already there from 2010. Previously, the 3.5 download seemed awfully quick so maybe it was on the computer.

Terry,

Thanks for the help. I disabled the smartscreen and still have the same problem. When trying to install MS Streets & Trips, w/GPS Locator I get the following message. "Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 requires the installation of the MS visual C++ redistributable. To install the component now, click OK. I clicked OK, then got message, "one of the perquisite components failed to install. Set up will now exit. This computer came with Windows 8, and to be honest I am the anti-geek when it come to why a computer does what it does. Where as when a program loads, I can make it do almost anything in no time, go figure. Any other ideas on what I can do to get this program to load. If I can not get it to run, am considering going another route, can not see giving MS anymore of my money because their program will not run on their new operating system. Can you recommend another program or something I can install in my truck. My job requires me to travel to many remote locations and having something that will give me voice turn by turn directions is a must have for me. Again, thanks for all your time and help. Will wait to hear what you recommend.

Richard:
You are right Net 3.5 is an option you can turn on in 'Windows Features'

Texas Traveller:

I don't know why the C++ Restributable won't install. Maybe the easiest approach would be to download and install the C++ Redistributable first. You can get it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=5555.

If that site loads ok, I would just run rather than save the executable

Then try the S&T install again.

I went to the site and it said that my computer had a newer version of C++ and would not download the older version, tried to load S&T again and got the same messages, so guess I will just have to buy something else (stand alone) and put it in my truck. Any suggestions on what to buy? Thanks again for all your help.

It might be worthwhile to see what version of C++ is installed on your computer.

While on the Start screen (the one with all the icons), type 'uninstall'. This will bring up the Search screen and if you highlight 'Settings' on the right, will give you a list on the left starting with 'Uninstall a program'. Click on that for a list of installed programs and check for something called Microsoft Visual C++ xxxx.

You'l notice my version installed with S&T 2011 is 10.0.30319 ( I had to widen the column to see it all).

What is yours?

I'm going to bet you have a 64 bit computer and your version is an x64 one rather than an x86 one. As the x86 version and S&T 2011 will run on a 64 bit Win 7 machine, it should work on a 64 bit Win 8 machine.

One option is to uninstall your existing 64 bit C++ version and install S&T. If you find that some other program you use needs the 64 bit version, you can reinstall it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14632

If that is the case and they conflict S&T 2011 won't work!

EDIT As a test I installed the C++ x64 version on a Win 7 64 bit computer that already had the x86 version. It installed fine, did not displace the x86 version and S&T 2011 opened ok. So maybe it is just the order in which they are installed.

Terry,

Well I am about ready to just give up, lol. I uninstalled 64 bit C++ and tried to install S&T got same old message. Guess I will just have to go buy a stand alone GPS and mount it in my new truck. Unless you can think of anything else I can try. In any case, I just want to thank you for all your efforts in trying to solve my problem. Hope you are having a great weekend, your friend. Robert

I did try this morning to install the C++ 32 bit version on my Win 7 64 bit computer that already had the 64 bit C++ and didn't see a problem. So I was wondering what was preventing yours. Unfortunately, I have run out of ideas so far. There are no newer versions of the redistributable so I am confused by the error message.

Did you notice any unusual programs listed when you had the list up? I could change the laptop to 64 bit Win 8 but suspect it would not have the issues you are experiencing as Win 7 64 doesn't.

Next I tried S&T 2013 on my Win 7 64 bit computer. Unfortunately, it also requires the C++ x86 version. You will have to find what is blocking that if you want to use S&T. I'm pretty sure it is not related to Win 8 but some other software on your computer.

Apparently there is a 10.0.4219 version of the 2010 Redistributable. What uses it, I don't know but a thread I was reading (Win 7) about it suggested uninstalling both the x32 and x64 versions then installing the x86 10.0.30319 version from the link I lsted earlier (or with S&T).

My concern would be some program that uses the newer version that may no longer work and I don't know where you would find the download.
