MS Streets & Trips forward compatibility?
Carlinhos
I use MS Streets 2007 and my client recently started sending me maps created in MS Streets 2011. I can't open these files and am wondering if there's a patch or workaround that will make their files compatible with my older version of Streets? I don't want to upgrade to the 2011 version because I've heard a lot of negative things about it.
Thanks,

In a word, no. Newer versions won't write older versions and older versions won't open newer.

I suspect you can run both versions on your computer if you really need to but how big a negative can 2011 have to make you not willing to spend $29 dollars to keep a client happy.

Hi t92....,
The client doesn't even like 2011, so is considering switching back to 2007, but since that means removing and reinstalling on a bunch of computers that may not happen for a few months or more. They send me multiple locations every month, so manually entering each address is a pain. And many of the locations are new construction with unregistered addresses so Streets can't find them and they have to be manually moved to their actual locations. When we were all on the 2007 version they could simply send me their map files, but now the only way to send them would be by a CSV file, but that wouldn't pin-point the corrected locations for new construction. So finding a compatibility fix would be awesome. What do you have in mind?

You can have multiple versions of Streets installed simultaneously with no problems. So spring the $29 bucks - it's a business expense anyway - and install 2011 right beside 2007. That way they can continue sending you the maps just like they used to. Then, if/when they go back to 2007 you will still have it installed and you just go back to using it instead.

In the meantime, if there is some reason to be able to get stuff from their 2011 maps into your 2007 version, just fire up a copy of both versions and copy/paste the data from the map in the 2011 window to the map in the 2007 window.

The only warning is that if there is a feature (eg. data type, pushpin type, whatever) in 2011 that wasn't in 2007 you will either lose the particular bit of data or it will switch to a 2007 default.

If your client is working in 2011 right now I don't know why you would want to do anything with their 2011 maps in 2007 Streets anyway. But you can do it both directions with copy/paste between them as long as you stay with features/functions that are common to both.
