Automatic zoom not working as expected in Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013
Richard in South Carolina
HELP PLEASE - S&T 2013 & SURFACE PRO

1. Planning my trip from Seattle to South Carolina with Streets & Trips 2013 was great.

2. Using S&T as a GPS sucked for me.
Example-When using the OEM GPS installed in my car if I made an unscheduled turn I would get an audio "Off Route" and the screen would remain as it was if that makes sense.

Using S&T 2013 if I made an unscheduled turn the screen zoomed out to view the entire United States. Due to the icons on the S&T screen being so small I could not make an effort to get back to where I needed to be on the map without stopping the car, and finding the touch pen.

I must admit that in the past every time I thought something was wrong with a computer program, someone pointed out my error to fix the problem. Please tell me that I'm missing some simple function that will make it all better.

Are all the S&T GPS users on this forum content or is this old man just falling farther & farther behind in this changing world of technology?

Last night I posted a similar thread somewhere. I thought it was here but don't see it this morning.

Richard ,

I am new to S&T and have 2013 with GPS and I have had a few problems that was due to me not understanding things. I am behind in this changing world of technology too and will never be on top of it and don't want to.
I don't use all the features that is on the S&T, but I am happy with it so far, does the things that I want it to. Jay.

Richard, I must admit that I don't understand what is going on that would zoom out so much if you go off-route. Certainly, S&T gets pissed off if you deviate from the route.

Also, I sympathize with your problems of trying to control your Surface Pro when actively navigating. I have a device with a touch screen which is not really suitable for on-the-go mouse control. What I have found that works very well is the Ergnomic Touchpad -- see http://www.ergonomictouchpad.com/ergonomic_touchpad.php?gclid=CLf3wab8grgCFUue4Aod7zoA6A -- that is attached to my central console (or just on the floor hump in my Jeep) with velcro.

Jay, have you used a regular GPS? I have both, an OEM factory installed GPS and I have a Garmin portable GPS. I find both of these to be easy to operate while in the car. Both have either large screen touch buttons or mechanical controls to adjust the GPS. The S&Ts is impossible to use for me. The icons are tooooooo small. I tried again today on another short trip to use S&Ts. I am one more try from forgetting about S&T and using my old OEM installed unit. I love the trip planning in S&T but using it as a GPS sucks.

SpadesFlush- I assume you are using a Surface Pro with S&Ts. If so do you have a problem with it having very low volume? I can't get enough volume out of the Surface to hear the turn by turn commands. I hope I am missing some volume adjustment but so far I am unable to increase the volume. My cell phone has more volume than my Surface. Other than that I love the Surface Pro.

Richard, try this trick to increase sound volume. I hope it works on Windows 8, too (I'm still on Windows 7 as I need my start menu).

Hello Marvin,

Thanks for the sound volume idea. I checked and my settings are the same as the "try this trick"

No, Richard, I am not using a Surface Pro. I am using an 'obsolete' Viliv UMPC which about the size of a very thick smart phone. It's speakers are more than adequate in my very quiet passenger cars but are inadequate in my Jeep Wrangler, where I use ear-buds plugged into the audio port.

If the speakers in your Surface Pro are indequate, you might be able to port the audio into your car stereo system.

Richard,
you said,Jay, have you used a regular GPS? I have both, an OEM factory installed GPS and I have a Garmin portable GPS. I find both of these to be easy to operate while in the car. Both have either large screen touch buttons or mechanical controls to adjust the GPS. I have the ACER netbook with the S&T /GPS and a hand held Magellan GPS for Geocaching that is only good for Geocaching.

The S&Ts is impossible to use for me. The icons are tooooooo small. I tried again today on another short trip to use S&Ts. I am one more try from forgetting about S&T and using my old OEM installed unit. I love the trip planning in S&T but using it as a GPS sucks.

Are you talking about the ones on the map ( POI ) ones ? yes they are small but you can make them bigger by going to the top and click on tools than options and set the size that you like than OK it. You can do this with your map open with the route you have and than go to the top and move the minus to the plus to get the icons bigger. You will loose the bigger picture of the map but you have bigger icons.
I leave mine on the smaller size as I don't need the street detailed for most of my needs. Jay

I was referring to the icons that operate the program. I guess it's just me if all you folks are using S&T as a GPS.

I did find where I can make the icons larger but to me they are still to small compared to a Garmin or oem installed GPS.

Old age is taking it's toll. I hate this getting old thing.

Richard, what do you have your S&T/ GPS on ( laptop? )
Example-When using the OEM GPS installed in my car if I made an unscheduled turn I would get an audio "Off Route" and the screen would remain as it was if that makes sense.

I don't use the audio at all, I only got off route once do to detour and that was for a short distance and the S&T stopped for that time than it got back to were it should be without me doing anything.

My screen has not zoomed out at anytime for me, the only that I had a problem was when we stopped for 15 minutes or longer than I had to restart S&T.

I am 68 and I don't use all the features that S&T/GPS has and don't need them. I have only used my S&T on 3'000 trip so I may have been lucky that things went well.

Jay, what size screen do you have on your ACER notebook? My Surface Pro has a 10 inch screen. When in my office I have the Surface connected to a large monitor. The icons are a good size on the monitor but small on the 10 inch screen.

Richard, I have a 11.6 " screen on my netbook.
I could not see my map from the drivers seat without making the map size bigger , I could make it even bigger but than you lose a lot of area, you just have to adjust it to what works best for you.
