GPSMap 76 works fine with nRoute but not MobilePC
robowens
Hey guys,

I have a GPSMap 76 that as you know outputs in NMEA format, but it refuses to aquire satellites in Garmin Mobile PC 5.00.70. It works beautifully in nRoute with GPSGate. I've also tried xPort and that isn't working either. Any ideas? I have been searching for 5.00.60 to test, but I can't find a good link anywhere for it.

Thanks!

There were some problems with previous versions on Mobile PC working with Garmin GPS devices. However that should not affect you when using GPS Gate.

I suspect you have a hardware only copy of Mobile PC that will only work with the GPS device (10x or 20x) it was sold with.

That may be a possibility ... The unit works great w/Streets & Trips '13 and nRoute.

Here's what I don't get at all: The GPS unit itself shows as 3D or 3D Differential. GPSDiag, Earthbridge, and SiRF all show a fix but they aren't seeing satellites individually. I've tested this with and without GPSGate and xPort. I'm just puzzled by this - I have known good (and latest) drivers and the 76 is on a brand new Hawking (Profilic) USB-Serial Converter. Both of my laptops are receiving the signal (same story) but the green bars aren't showing like they should (GPSDiag). GPSDiag is showing it's fixed on 7 satellites. Are there any driver settings I can verify? Should I try a different USB-Serial converter? Why on earth would it do this?

This really sucks - it's a nice and expensive GPS and this project keeps getting more expensive. A new USB receiver is not an option.

Actually, I don't see how it could be a HW only version. I also set it up with the "NO" option when it asked if I purchased the one with the receiver.

Thanks,

Did you enter the code from the yellow sticker (or was that green)?

Why don't you put the GPSMap back to its regular output rather than NMEA. Then let GPS Gate find it and provide the NMEA output for you. Maybe that will work with the other programs you are trying. It won't work with GMPC unless it is the software version regardless but might help you track down your other issues.

I think it may have been green but I'll have to look again. Didn't really pay attention. Tried that and my laptop just had a panic attack I'll keep jacking with this - will report.

Thanks,

Sure enough, having GPSGate translate it worked perfectly. You're the man! I had no idea it could do that! I hope this thread is valuable for someone in the future - I've been working on this for over a week!!!

Thanks again!

When working with more than one GPS monitoring program, there is a problem area you have to watch closely. Each GPS device can only provide one output so you must ensure all monitoring programs are shut down before trying a different one.

Even GPS Gate will tie up the output of the GPS while it is running. However it has the advantage of providing more than one output while it is running (even a specialized one for nRoute).
