Transferring Detail Maps from Mapsource to Mobile PC

I must have misunderstood a previous post. I thought you said you could use either img file with one of your 20x's. Still, its now just a matter of labelling your 20x's per continent and using the appropriate one. Maybe you could have them both plugged in and switch between them.

All the testing so far has been to match the appropriate receiver with its matching mapset but only use one Mobile PC installation. The results have been consistent and they show us two things:

1. The mapsets are definitely tied to their matching receiver and will work happily with them, whether you change the GMAPPROM.IMG or use one as GMAPPROM.IMG and the other as GMAPSUPP.IMG. You have to suffer Mobile PC occasionally whining about one thing or another, but that's minor. And supports the second item...

2. The mapsets are tied so tightly to their matching receiver that there's no point in trying to get them both working with one receiver. It's simply not going to happen. This item applies only to the preloaded, precompiled mapsets that come with the Mobile PC/Receiver hardware bundles.

This is all supportive of the idea that Mobile PC, its preloaded maps and its bundled receiver work exactly the same as if you took a Nuvi and exploded it into its parts ... stuff the nav software and the maps into the PC and connect the display and receiver to them.

It also means that Julian can be comfortable that getting City Navigator Europe and an unlock code for the North America receiver will be the solution he is expecting it to be.

I need your help guys. I purchased a copy of City Navigator Europe NT 2009 today but at the moment cannot register it with the North America 20X. I have tried the autostart routine on the DVD but it says that there is no suitable Garmin device to install it to. I then tried MapSource (version 6.13.7) with the unlock routine but I eventually get a web server error after entering the 20X serial number and the 8 character product key that came with the DVD. It suggested that I should contact Customer Support but I have no comfort that this will do me any good - the UK support guys are bound to tell me (again) that you can't add any additional maps to Mobile PC. Thoughts???

Are you actually seeing it in the MapSource map list drop down? It doesn't sound like it installed. There is some unlock information on the Garmin site.

No it is not installed in MapSource. I think the reason may be that the DVD I have been sold is a map update DVD and not an original. Maybe it is looking for an original version of the European maps?

I would tend to agree. The update is specifically for a device. You want part number 010-10373-00.

Terry is correct. An "update" DVD will refuse to install if it does not see a previous version of the same product already installed. It has nothing to do with your GPS.

Oh I see. This is the NT version. That is probably the one you would need but either would work.

I don't think that is the case any more. The update DVDs actually look for the Garmin device before they will install. I already have a useless DVD as I purchased the wrong one last year. I could install it now that I have a couple of Nuvis but I already have the maps.

When I got the update DVD for City Navigator North America 2009 (non-NT) it did not look for a Garmin device when it installed. It did look for a previous version of either City Select or City Navigator. It says right on the front of the jewel case "Mapsource Update DVD" and also "Update for previous versions of City Select, City Navigator and StreetPilot 2620 or 2660."

I paid nothing ($0.00) for the DVD. I picked it up at GPSCentral on my way through Calgary to the Left Coast at no charge. (Now that I think about it, I've never paid for an update disk in the four upgrades I've done since my original City Select NA v5.) But I had to buy an unlock code from Garmin. In my case I had to phone Garmin, for reasons unrelated to Julian's issues, to get my unlock code. It took only long enough for them to get my credit card info and read me the new unlock code.

I've never purchased NT-format maps because my iQue does not support them and the non-NT versions work just fine in Mobile PC, Mobile XT and my eTrex.

The reason the Update DVDs cost nothing is because the updated maps on it are useless without an unlock code. You have to acquire an unlock code either through the Mapsource unlock wizard, which will connect to a Garmin server to get it, or through your MyGarmin online account, or by phoning. In all three cases you have to pay for the unlock code in order to receive it.

Garmin cannot include an unlock code with an update DVD because the unlock code is based on a three-digit product ID from the map product and the Unit ID from your GPS device. They can't know in advance what model of device you'll be using it with, let alone what the Unit ID of your device is.

I really don't understand why an update DVD would refuse to install based on the GPS hardware. That's not something I've ever encountered in the three forums I participate in that cover Garmin handheld devices (two of them for at least five years). On the other hand I have seen all sorts of Help messages from people who have been sold the update DVD when they didn't have any Garmin maps previously.

What gripes me is not only that some retailers will do this without asking the customer if they already have a previous version, but that they actually take money for the update disk when it's no good without an unlock code that you're going to have to pay for anyway.

Perhaps there is some other version of the City Navigator DVDs floating around out there that I have not yet encountered? ... I've seen some people mention a "coupon" or "promotion code". Perhaps there is a version of the update DVD that is sold with a coupon in it that can be used to acquire the unlock code without having to pay additional money for the unlock code?

I have a Map Update 2009 DVD (CNNA NT 2009) and my computer had both v8 and 2008. It has a big green sticker with the product key. The DVD would not install without a device (XT did not qualify).

I also have the 2008 update DVD (for XT) that was free. The unlock code was provided by Garmin for free as part of the original XT (v8)install.

There were several versions last year with 2009 (and I ordered the wrong one). I don't expect anything has changed this year.

I don't understand what you mean by "product key" in this context. Do you mean a 25 character unlock code? Or is it something else?

The only thing I've ever seen with a big green Product Key sticky is the software-only version of Mobile PC. I've never seen it on a Garmin map product. That doesn't mean I don't believe you. It just means I've never seen it and it doesn't make any sense based on what I do understand about Garmin map products, so I'm confused by it. Do you have any idea what it was actually supposed to be for? Eg. what specific device it was expecting to see?

It is an 8 character thing exactly like Mobile PC. It has to do with generating the 25 digit code using the device and the Garmin site. My records show several of these keys associated with the Nuvis so I know I've done it but can't remember the procedure. If the update is a free download, Garmin provides the 8 digit code.
