Transferring Detail Maps from Mapsource to Mobile PC

I was hoping someone would suggest a city. It does show more highway detail in this test though so that would be valuable.

It looks like it depends on the area of the world you check out, I guess. It's obvious that there is no substitute for detailed maps of a country or state. I think I would stick with the basemap in Mobile PC and spend my time searching for Garmin-compatible detail maps of the part of the world I'm interested in.

Hi!

I have Mobile PC 5.00.10 and Map Source 6.13.70, and here's the problem:

when I follow the procedure given in post #1, MapSource successfully transfers map to Mobile PC. When I try to browse the map on Mobile PC it declares that there's no map, although it's listed (in tools -> manage my data -> map sets) as 'detailed maps'.

What am I doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. The downloaded 'trial' version of Mobile PC does not come with a base map and the program does not know where you are unless you use a GPS. The map you added probably does not include Olathe, Kansas, USA so the program tells you there is no map.

A good start would be to add a basemap to your program as dicussed elsewhere on this site. Then you could browse to the area of the world for which you have a map.

Good job this guide, I just dicovered it this morning...

By the way I had refresh the maps of my Mobile PC last week with 2010.1 editions and replaced 2008 ver. of North America by ver. 2010,1

But on travel I use Microsoft Streets and Trips on my Laptop and My Garmin Nuvi 750... Both in same time

I use Mapsource ver. 6.15.6

I have a similar problem. my mobile PC doesnt come with gmapbmap.img.
I have transferred a map to MobilePC and under MobilePC's MAPSET, i can see my map. I can also do a seach for addresses. and my USB GPS is working with MobilePC, I can see the reception and get location lock but when i select VIEW MAP, the whole que.exe just freezes. what gives.
nroute works for me. so that's what i'm using now. but ideally would like MobilePC to work the interface is so similar to my Nuvi765.

If you like the product, why not buy it. All versions of Mobile PC come with a basemap.

@tcassidy, thanx, I've solved the problem. You were right, all I needed was a basemap

Your comment prompted me to reinstall with the DVD first rather than just running the update directly. and it works fine now, yeah, the DVD has got basemap.

Slightly not related, but I just realized that Europe and Australia CNVT works fine for MobilePC after compiling for it. but Europe doesn't show up in nRoute 2.7.6. Still wondering why.

I'm finding nRoute much easier to use cuz I don't need to compile every time for each country unlike MobilePC.

Meantime, when I compile both EU and AU, I get "ERROR: Assert failed at uni_CNVT.c: 326 in pocketnav with error 0". but it's fine if i compile EU and AU individually.

It is possible your Australia map DVD is the old Garmin format and Europe is the new format. Only maps that are visible in the dropdown of MapSource 6.13.7 will appear in nRoute whereas any map that you can open in MapSource 6.15.6 can be converted for Mobile PC.

Take a look at this converter for the newer map.

I was reading massively since the last post. it seems that the 6.15.6 doesnt like free maps also. I can't install free countries like Cambodia to install into MobilePC.

If you are referring to the "Transfer to Device", I haven't seen that error message but it could be choking on the size.

Are you aware Mobile PC allows 3 maps which can be switched on or off using the MapSource button on the bottom of the Tools - Manage My Data - Map Sets screen in Mobile PC.

After transferring your first map to Mobile PC, rename gmapsupp.img to gmapsup2.img in the Mobile PC folder. Then transfer your other map.

Yeah, I figured that part out and also figured out that GMAPSUP3.IMG doesnt work also. Was testing my luck.

Question, instead of recompiling another set for my nuvi765, can I just copy the compile set for MobilePC over to the SD.

If you are doing a lot of reading of this site, you know you can have more than one version of MapSource on the same computer. Get a copy of MapSource 6.13.7 from one of the various sources including the link I posted. It may solve your transfer of free maps problem.

Mobile PC is primarily a navigation program. As you can't posssibly be navigating in all those countries at once, MapSource is a better tool.
