Add route/trip files to CoPilot Live Android???
Ken in Regina
Hey Don or Malaki, do either of you know where you place a .TRP file to get CoPilot to use it as a saved route?

I noticed on another forum today that you can plan a route on the PC with, say, Garmin Mapsource, save the route as a .GPX file, and use GPS Visualizer (or whatever) to convert it to a .TRP file. If you put it in CoPilot it will use the file as a saved route. But it didn't say what folder to put it in. The thread was 9 months old and dead.

Before I spend a bunch of time putting files in the wrong folders, does anyone know which folder to use?

I dug around in the folders on the tablet, but didn't find anything with any .trp files in them. But, I've never saved a trip, either. I just keep adding/removing stops as my loads change.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

DOH!! Why didn't I think of it?!! All I need to do is create a trip, save it and see where the file goes.

Thanks!

lol - no problem. Hope it's easy to find.

Okay, the trip files are saved into the .../NA/SAVE folder. Now I just need to put one of my own from Mapsource and see if CoPilot finds it.

Ken - did you ever get a conclusion on this one? I don't think that a Mapsource file would translate to CoPilot. But I know that you are an industrious fella. Just wondering.

It kind of works. Sort of....

1. Created a route with Mapsource.
2. Saved it as a .GPX file.
3. Used the GPSBabel program (Windows) to convert .GPX to .OV2.
4. Placed .OV2 file in the .../NA/SAVE folder on my Android phone.
5. Ran CoPilot and it notices the new file.

This is where it gets a little hinky. It takes me through the standard POI import routine. So it looks like all it does is import the waypoints contained in the .OV2 file rather than creating a route. The waypoints appear in the category I told CoPilot to put them in. But I can't find a saved route when I go to Plan or Edit Trip > Options > Load.

It looks like it's just another way to load waypoints which I was already doing with .CSV files.

Sorry it took so long to clarify this. When I discovered that this wasn't useful for adding preplanned routes I just sort of dropped it and forgot to update the thread.

Sorry to drag this up, Ken. If one needs to import a route to CoPilot you just have to convert the .gpx file to .trp sted of .OV2. The usual caveats apply: if you have a twisty route for a motorcycle ride and import it into CoPilot and "Shortest" or "Fastest" routes are tagged then CoPilot will probably reroute to the destination.

I posted this just for searchers looking for import solutions. At least it wasn't from the last century, just yesteryear. :-)

Thanks Ted! Great way to end the year with an answer to tidy things up. These discussion threads are great reference sources. All the best in the new year!

This is for anyone searching to find a way to get routes into ALK CoPilot for Android or simply how to convert a common file format, like GPX into a .TRP file.

GPS Babel (and the online version, GPS Visualizer) no longer support .TRP file conversion.

I use a program called RouteConverter.

http://www.routeconverter.de/home/en

I use the Windows version. It works fine on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version. It requires that you have the Java runtime environment installed. I have converted .GPX files, created by Garmin's Mapsource and Garmin's Basecamp, into .TRP files that ALK CoPilot for Android is happy to use.

1. Copy the .TRP file into the "com.alk.copilot.mapviewer/NA/save" folder on the Android device.
2. Run CoPilot,
3. Tap "New Destination",
4. Tap the route icon at the bottom of the screen,
5. Tap "Plan or Edit Trip",
6. Tap "Options" at the bottom of the screen, and
7. Tap "Load".

CoPilot will display a list of any .TRP files it finds in the .../NA/save folder. Just tap the one you want and proceed to use it or edit it.

If you aren't using a North America version of CoPilot, the "save" folder may under something other than "NA".

I have not used this program for a long time, but it claims to support .trp files.

Thanks Boyd. It's always good to have options. Going forward, if I want to have a complex route for CoPilot on my Android phone or tablet I'll use one of the following two options:

1. Furkot's Road Trip Planner (online service) if I want more than just a route planned. It has a ton of useful features for trip planning and will export a .TRP file directly. I have tested this with a three day trip I planned on Furkot with a moderately complex route expressly intended for a fun motorcycle ride. Details in this thread:

2. If I just want a route planned with no other fancy stuff like accomodations or food stops or sightseeing spots, I'll just use the route planner built into CoPilot for Android. I didn't mention it in the testing I described in the above mentioned thread but I did a fourth test for the same route I used in that test. I used CoPilot's built-in route planner to produce it and it was the easiest of all options to create it and force it where I wanted it to go. ... Even on my phone which isn't the most ergonomic device to do that sort of thing!!
