Unable to acquire update of legal maps on Garmin Mobile PC 10x
AllenMaloney
First of all let me apologize to all the connoisseurs out there if I have wrongly worded the title of this post.
To make a long story short, after getting my laptop stolen a couple years ago, I have acquired a new one on which I have installed my legal package of Mobile PC that came with a 10x.
It came with a CNNANT2010 map. I was able to get it going.
The problem arose when I tried to update my maps using my nuMaps lifetime membership.
I was prompted to download Garmin Express, I did, installed by the darn thing won’t find my 10x.
I went through all the suggested Garmin's suggestion (new drivers, latest version of WMP ????) to no avail.
In desperation I wrote to Garmin support to receive the following message from them:
Garmin Express does not support the GPS 10 or Mobile PC software. Unfortunately we no longer support mapping updates for this product. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused

WOW, this is a real slap in the face, they essentially are telling me that I cannot get new updates, not even the updates that I had received in the past (up to CNNANT 2013.10).

So once again, I will turn to the people on this site for advice.
Is there any way out of this apparent impasse

Hi Allen,

I don't think I've ever had much luck with Garmin Express updating my Garmin Mobile PC maps. I think I've always used GarminMapUpdater.exe instead. I'm going to email it to you. Un-zip it, and then use the exe file to try to update your maps. Please, reply here to tell us how it goes.

I am glad to hear you have a copy Marvin and hope it works. I searched high and low yesterday for a version I was sure I saved and couldn't track it down.

First off I wish to thank Marvin for this file (GarminMapUpdater).
It worked like a charm: it recognized Mobile-PC installed and then I was able to download the latest update (CNNANT 2015.10).
It ''installed'' them and I assume it connected to my garmin support because when I go there I can see it listed under map.
It shows:
Code: a 8 digit code
Unlock Code: a bunch of letters and numbers
Date Unlocked: July 21, 2014
(By the way where is it on my computer (the location)?).
But now, when I go into the Mobile-PC program and look at the map details, I can see that the new map is not used (because the highway 30, opened a few years back, is still not showing).
I add as an info that if go in mapSource, the program does not see CNNANT 2015.10, it is not listed. (not sure if this info is relevant)

So now the question to my colleagues is, how do I get Mobile-PC to use this new map?

Thanks in advance for your help on this matter.

Terry, it's here on my HDD when ever you need it.

Allen,

Go to:

Garmin Mobile PC -> Tools -> Manage my data -> Map sets -> Built-in maps

It should show you the version. Mine shows 2015.10. I don't recall doing anything other than following the instructions of the Updater program. Perhaps try again.

Allen,

The new map will not be available for MapSource unless you jumped through the hoops to specifically install it to your computer when downloading. Otherwise the download is converted to a gmapprom.img file and placed directly in the Garmin Mobile PC folder. This will give the indication Marvin listed.

Marvin,

Yes please send it thanks. I guess I misplaced it when I rebuilt this computer. Strange as I still have all the original drives not overwritten. I probably just don't know where to look!

Now that I am back in business, let me push my luck further. In the old days, I was using a program called n'route and converting my maps from a program that I recall getting from a dutch location. Is that still possible?
tcassidy
Marvin,

Thank you, that worked fine.

Allen,

Yes, MapReverseConverter is available here

You do need the 'MapSource' version of the 2015.1 file though as that is what it converts. Did you download that?

Terry
AllenMaloney
tcassidy, please excuse my ignorance and total confusion.
I have this working file (CNNANT 2015.10) for my Mobile-PC, it is in gmapprom.img form.
Can I do anything with that, meaning can I convert it to use it in n'Route?

Allen

No, you need the gmap version that works with MapSource. On the computer, it is saved at C:\Program Data\GARMIN\Maps.

To download it run the map updater again and look for a 'View options' button after about the third contacting server screen. Choose that and pick an option from the list. I've marked the second option on the screen shot but you probably want the third as you already have the Mobile PC one downloaded. It will still take as long to download but will work with MapSource and MRC.

Sir, thanks for the info. Infortunatly I am at work now, so I cannot try it. I can't wait to be retired so work will not be interfering with my hobbies.
I'll be sure to update the site on my results.
Let's chat later !

Being retired is boring! And you forget where you put things!!

Total success!
I have the new map, it has been reversed and n'Route is working.
It feels so nice to see a real map, not a comic book replica.
I have to give you an immense THANK YOU. I have this immense grin.
I am going to write the complete procedure down and store all the necessary programs on my server.
So few years down the road I will be able to get the procedure out with all the necessary software.
So once again gents, I tip my hat to you Marvin and Terry.

Another tool from the MRC author is GMTK, a great product for managing your Garmin maps.
http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

Also, remember that if your 10x gives up the ghost, nRoute will work with any GPS if you use GPS Gate. Unfortunately, the same is not true for Mobile PC.

Both are good tools to add to your collection.
